One thing I've noticed in the past few years are the uprising of many "catch" words like the "marxist/communist/socialist" thrown around by those on the right to describe anyone they disagree with, seemingly to replace the classic "liberal"
The right didn't invent the terms Marxist, Communist, Fascist or Socialist." Those words have specific meanings. The right just chooses to use them as a derogatory term for anyone they ideologically disagree with in order to vilify them.
Fore instance, when President Obama argued that the Bush tax-cuts should expire on wealthier Americans -- a measure that would raise the top rate from 35% to 39%, Stephen Schwarzman, a billionaire on the Forbes' 400 list of richest Americans, said Obama's plan was like "when Hitler invaded Poland in 1939." Well, if President Obama was really like Hitler; Mr. Schwarzman, who is Jewish, would have more on his mind than his taxes rising by 4%.

Great post and this is what is quite shocking to see with the poll results. I never expected to see this many people that are completely brainwashed to think that Obama and others they simply don't agree with are all "communists/marxist/socialists" (though maybe not, this is C-D ) even though they have been proven completely wrong time and time again.

What is freedom, if you think it is ok to tell everyone else, what to do and how to do it, to engineer a society to act a certain way?

Thank you. To answer the question, we must understand that the GOP unblushingly supports the interests of the rich and corporate interests. They know they can't win elections as that as their platform, so they must use slight of hand and outright misrepresentation to fool the majority of Americans to vote against their own interests. This is what Thomas Frank wrote in "What's the Matter with Kansas."
As for what BenBow wrote above, if in "1935 the FDR administration [orchestrated a] Communist take over of private property," somebody forgot to tell the Rockefellers, the Carnegies, the Vanderbilts, etc., who sure looked and acted like they were filthy rich after this "takeover."
What you are engaging in is guilt by association. Obama received 25 million votes in 2008. If some of those voters were Communists, does that mean Obama is a Communist?
McCain also received millions of votes. If some of those voters were members of the American White Supremacist Party, does that make McCain a white supremacist?
Obama's doctor is a hunter, that doesn't mean that Obama favors hunting?
Obama's accountant believes in ghosts, that doesn't mean that Obama believes in ghosts.
Your premise that if Obama knew someone that believes in X, Obama must also believe in X, is logically flawed.
Van Jones may or may not be a Communist. It doesn't detract from the reality that he was an expert in the field that he was appointed to perform -- unless you are going down the McCarthyist rabbit-hole that the government can't hire anyone unless they pass a specific ideological litmus test.
The fact is that Obama's policies over the last three years are very mainstream and many of those that the GOP call radical were their proposals at one time.
