Per person spending by the federal government in fixed dollars (aka adjusted for inflation):

Things look a little different when you look at facts and not individual pieces of data, cherry picked and distorted by the Obama campaign center (aka the NYT).

Bush II was a disaster with regard to spending, but Obama takes his incompetance to a different order of magnitude.

LOL! I love how the State Run Media is spinning this!

Its bad news that States and Local Governments are slammed by this bad economy.
It is bad news that Obama is spending like there is no tomorrow at the federal level.

But put it all in a blender and Obama is AWESOME because "GOVERNMENT" shrunk...

Amazing aint it.

for their next trick, the NYT is going to tell us how awesome Obama looks riding a bicycle and how the fact that the workforse has shrunk to historically low levels is doing wonders for our economy.

First line of the accompanying article:

FOR the first time in 40 years, the government sector of the American economy has shrunk during the first three years of a presidential administration.
From the link you posted:

Spending by the federal government, adjusted for inflation, has risen at a slow rate under President Obama.

Yeah sure, that $5 trillion in new debt never happened. Do I even need to read anymore after that, to figure out this writer's article is meant to mislead us? No.

Technically they can print $500 trillion, but it won't be worth anything.

The dollar won't be worth nearly as much ($500t is an insanely large sum), but it won't fall to zero. Regardless, the federal government cannot run out of money. People who say that it can are stupid.

Now, as far as the article was concerned, it is slightly misleading.

But that's fine with me ... the Dems need to step up their propaganda to the level of the GOP, in order to compete for the stupid / ignorant voters. Sadly their votes are worth just as much as everyone else's.

Damn, spending went up after Tea Party got hold of the congress!
