Given what an enlightened, liberal city New York is supposed to be...I have to wonder why residents are willing to put up with this? It wouldn't fly in a libertarian place like Idaho. I guess that's a difference between an urban mentality and a rural one.

I don’t think it’s an urban vs rural mentality difference because in LA this wouldn't fly as well. New Yorkers are of a different bread.

Default Is the OP going to provide a link to his "facts"?

Mayor Bloomberg is a liberal and also the top law enforcement officer of NYC. Given that he is willing to infringe upon the 2nd Amendment rights of NYC's residents it suprises me not that he is also willing to ignore the 4th Amendment as well.

Obama has gutted the 4th Amendment and yet the OP isn't complaining. It would seem that Bloomberg's stop & frisk policy is directly in sync with the Obama agenda.

I bet poor whites are stopped at a rate equal to or greater than blacks. Helps mitigate the statistics.

It's a good example of how the slippery slope can work, even though it is often derided as argument from 'paranoia' and 'fear mongering.'

NYC has not just had a war on guns, they've had a Brit-style war on knives. They have some very restrictive laws on the carrying of pocket knives and aggressively enforce them. NYC prosecutor Cyrus Vance Jr. ran a bunch of sting operations on cutlery shops and even places like home depot for selling pocket knives that were illegal under NY law.

Not according to the statistics...

87 percent of those stopped by the NYPD in 2011 were black or latino.

Let me guess in NY you can’t have a knife larger than two inches. I don’t agree with a lot of these weapons bans at all.

I'm not surprised that your list of "15 facts" came from the Huffington Post. I was reading through them thinking, "That's not a fact, that's an opinion. How do you quantify THAT?!," etc., and then I got to the link underneath and it suddenly all made sense.

More trash being posted by one of the trashiest sites on the 'net. Golly, what a shock.

NYPD Stop And Frisks: 15 Shocking Facts About A Controversial Program
http://www.criminaljustice.ny.gov/cr...Report2011.pdf

All statistics from crime is dropping... Could it be such programs are working and making people safer?

Quote:
Over the past 10 years, the overall rate of Index
crimes per 100,000 residents declined 19 percent; the
rate of violent crimes (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated
assault) fell 20% and property crimes (burglary,
larceny, and motor vehicle theft) were down 18%. The
largest reductions in crime rates were reported for motor
vehicle theft and forcible rape (see Appendix 1 for a
statewide, annualized comparison of crime rates).
