I believe the comment was regarding "the left," you know, like in Communist; not non-U.S. citizens.

As an Australian, I've visited the US 6 times and I love the diversity.
I wouldn't be at all interested in seeing the suburbs of some all-white, all-straight, all-Christian-conservative small town with everyone going to church on Sunday and eating apple pie afterwards.
It must be difficult being a xenophobe.
I'd wager they consider a trip to Myrtle Beach an exotic destination.
