I think what has changed is the definition of racism. For example today, it is supposedly racist to want our immigration laws respected and enforced.

I spend a considerable amount of time around Generation Y people and as a group I find them to be less racist.

They are certainly a hell of lot less racist than those over the age of 60.

This is absolutely false. Entire genres of white rappers exist (frat rap, reggae rap, rock-rap, hipster hop). Members in all these genres are Black, White, Hispanic, etc. Black hipsters exist. Blipsters. Black hipsters love indie rock, etc. No goth Latinos?! That's actually a stereotype in my hometown. The overweight, teenage goth Latino. Athletic Asians used to be, and still is, a tired stereotype (Asians knowing martial arts). Most research and polling shows that the younger you are (with our generation being the youngest polled), the more likely you were not racist. In fact, you were more likely to live in a racially diverse neighborhood than an older person. Makes sense since the older generations did believe in segregation.
It seems to my younger people are just more comfortable in social situations with people that don't necessarily look like them and they are more willing to take an interest in other cultures.

Sweeping generalization. Most Greatest Generation members do NOT deserve to be lumped in with those bigots.

Almost every person in my age range (18-30) seems to be completely interested in staying in their own "place", playing the "ethnic role", and is a proponent of balkinaztion (but they call it "diversity" and "multiculturalism"). Where I live, many "Gen-Y'ers" either fit into these roles:

-The preppy, yuppie, or hipster role (if white)
-The ghetto, bluppie, or "keepin it real" role if black
-The La Raza, cholo, or habla no Ingles role if Latino
-The immigrant, nerdy, or rich foreigner role if Asian/Indian/Middle Eastern

There's no individuality promoted amongst my generation, and the masses/MSM/society would rather you believe that a white person who's into rap, a black person who's into rock, a Latino who is into goth, and an Asian who is athletic, doesn't exist. And it's been pissing me off that people keep chanting that overdone line "younger people are more open minded," but when you look at the (non-forced) associations, happy-hours, nightlife, couples, and all other social gatherings, it's either every one sticks to their own race, or they avoid people of my skin color. And the tension is growing more by the day with this Zimmerman/Martin fiasco, Obama's absolute failure as a president, and the manipulation of "Gangsta/Hood/Southern Rap" being sold as a legitimate culture.

I only differentiate this from other generations because it seems like this attitude is not as prevalent (although still noticeable) from Gen-X'ers. From my perspective, there are more people in their late 30s thru early 50s that are more racially open-minded. And from what I saw from TV from the 80s and 90s, there was more racial integration, the TV/movie/cartoon characters didn't act out in some "ethnic role" (i.e. everyone acted NORMAL), and there wasn't this facade of multiculturalism as an excuse to self-segregate under the guise of "diversity".

And that's another thing. Self-segregation is being rationalized as a "good thing that the masses want". Well...I damn sure was never ask, and I damn sure don't want to self-segregate, especially if its to a "culture" that despises and would chop off the heads of those who don't play "ethnic ball" and act like a BET/rap video stereotype!

This is my observation. But I may be wrong. It could be that the city and region where I'm currently in attracts narrow-minded Gen-Y bigots (which wouldn't surprise me one bit) while other cities attracts open-minded people my age and are legitimately open to a truly racially integrated society. But from what I've been reading on the forums and have been seeing in society as of late (from all sides and apparently nationwide), everyone wants to segregate-segregate-segregate, and I've about HAD IT UP TO HERE with being caught in the middle of all of this BS, and not even having an option to either segregate into some secluded racially-integrated-designed gated community/city/region or expatriate to a less racially balkanized country. White racists can flock to Staten Island and Orange County, and militant blacks can flock to Atlanta and DC, but those who WANT integration are having less and less cities and areas to choose from!* Where the hell are our choices, or am I the only one who wants an integrated society where I can define who the hell I am as an individual and not have to act like a stereotypical black to find a "community" to belong to? I thought Gen-Y was supposed to be the ones who would create that, but it looks like they're continuing the practices of their parents and elders, if not making it worse through covert means and adding Asians and most Latinos to their reign of bigotry.

*And the places that seem to be racially integrated have horrible job markets, so there's no way many people can feasibly move there as is.
Fairfaxian, you the man for posting this. I'm glad someone brought this up, and I don't think I could've done a better job of articulating this myself.

I agree with everything you said, except the part about Obama failing as president. I'm a socialist and I have mixed feelings about President Obama. He's done some good and some bad.

I'm an older Gen Y member, and I think we see eye to eye on this. Growing up in the 90's it did seem like race relations in america were more progressive. I actually think that people believe in and perpetuate stereotypes more today than they did back then. In high school, I remember socializing and hanging out with people of different races. Now I'm in college and most everybody at my school just keeps to their own race. I thought college was a time for young people to break out of their usual "shell", and mingle with people from different backgrounds?

Yes the "ethnic roles" are very obvious. It's like you're only allowed to portray yourself according to your race's stereotype/archetype. And if you don't people act suprised as if they don't know any better. Aren't we smarter than that? Do people just think it's easier to believe and perpetuate stereotypes than to use your brain and have an open mind? Or do people just have so much fun with them that they don't even want to try to do better? No I'm not a fan of the "ethnic roles" or stereotypes either. I hear you when you said before everyone acted "normal", because that's how I am.

People say younger folks are more open minded, but I don't think so. The past few years, I've talked to so many people my age at work and at school who are clearly prejudiced. I'm not a fan of self-segregation either and I'm d@mn sick and tired of it too. I guess our generation just isn't as open minded as expected or as they pretend to be for PC's sake. Or maybe people are self segregating because they feel like it's easier.

I've been to other countries, and from what I've seen, some other places outside the u.s. are more integrated than here. After college, I hope to immigrate overseas.

Xer but almost a Boomer; I was born in 1965. It's a mixed bag where I live in Phoenix, Arizona.

It seems that MOST Gen Y Black women who are slim, pretty and talk proper; even dark skin ones are almost always with anglo dudes and some couples even have kids. They're not that many loud hood rat women here except maybe in South Phoenix and even that area is becoming more Hispanic and anglo.

Obama is not a true black president. He is half white and was raised in an all white family. His father left and his white grandparents were a big part of Obama's life. If anyone could be called not black enough it would be Obama.

Unfortunately, I believe there is an element of truth to this. As successive generations become more removed from the post civil rights era social climate, there is more of a tendency to take the idea of racial tolerance and integration for granted. Many young people find it difficult to imagine living in a time of legally-enforced segregation, and so it all becomes a more or less distant and at best tangentially relevant collective memory for them.

From birth, the ideas of racial equity and progress have been taught and reinforced as social ideals pertinent to their generation. But as with every generation, there is a degree of resistance to present social order. As a result, their rebellious instinct now orients them away from the "PC" climate they have always been accustomed to, making it "cool" or "edgy" now to go against the present status quo of racial integration and tolerance.

Or maybe cause Phoenix grew big AFTER WW 2? Here the race laws against Blacks and brown Hispanics were thrown out about 60 years ago.

More and more Black guys are shacking up and marrying anglo women even here in Phoenix and those dudes DO have options.
