Your president gives the credit for the 40 hour work week to the unions:

Quote:
It was the labor movement that helped secure so much of what we take for granted today. The 40-hour work week, the minimum wage, family leave, health insurance, Social Security, Medicare, retirement plans. The cornerstones of the middle-class security all bear the union label.
Barack Obama
Do keep trying though.

How did I generalize? I was very specific about the eurozone. However, if you think that the troubles in the eurozone will not negatively effect most, if not all of the EU countries you are fooling yourself.

Completely agree 30hr work week should more often be adopted. not just for quality of life for the worker, but to avoid layoffs. If a company has 1000 workers and need to lay off 250, they rather could cut hours by 25% like u suggest and lay off no one. Much more humane in my opinion and I would be far from surprised if productivity went up. I bet it would increase consumer confidence as well because fearing your hours being cut vs losing your job is much less intimidating.

In Germany I believe the government supported such policies as reduced hours and/or across the board pay cuts at corporations to avoid lay offs at the beginning of the 2008 financial crisis.

Yet a lot of people get paid for 40 and are expected to work 60. Like myself, who hasn't put in less then 50 hours a week in years, and am usually above 60.

You wouldn't be paying your plumber time and half. His employer would.

Now he is nothing but a service technician for a farm implement company and he drives their service truck so lots of his hours are seat time. He makes about double what all the other technicians like him make because they refuse to work more than that 45 hours that the business is open for business.

Now Craig is so happy that he owns everything he has every bought. Owes nobody a dime and is stashing money away in the bank. He has a brother who works for the same company and never works more than maybe 50 hours during harvest when they all get in lots of 1 1/2 time work. Both of them are really what I wanted them to be in that they work extra for the customer and promote the employer by so doing.

I can guarantee you that if any fool ever really gets serious about passing that 30 hour per week they will be working against it. They know that they won't get enough from the government to supplement what they would make.
I don't think there is a single country on the planet where you are not allowed to work over 30 hr / week.

Socialist rhetoric. Share the misery equally. Instead of making a few workers unhappy, make everyone miserable by cutting hours below the point of earning a sustainable wage.

I agree. You're already taking up my entire day as it is. Just tack on one hour to each side of the day. If you promise me a 3 day weekend, I'm totally game.

Won't be for long with all these lazy mofos asking to work 4 hour days twice a week and then demanding full pensions and 8 months of paternity leave for their new puppy.
