A common refrain from the liberal left is that food stamp fraud claims are vastly overblown by the conservative right. It's just a figment of our imagination that those who collect food stamps are living high on the hog, driving shiny SUV's, wearing fancy clothes, etc. It's just not a reality, right?
Wrong.

Food stamp recipients are ripping off the government for millions of dollars by illegally selling their benefit cards for cash -- sometimes even in the open, on eBay or Craigslist -- and then asking the government for replacement cards.
But how could that be? The government has tight controls on who can receive benefits how those benefits are distributed, right?
Wrong.
[quote][color=#000000]The Agriculture Department wants to curb the practice by giving states more power to investigate people who repeatedly claim to lose their benefit cards.
Wait, you mean to tell me that USDA rules prevented states from cracking down on food stamp fraud by mandating that benefits could not be denied, unless fraud was blatant?? You mean that we've been relying on the food stamp desk agent to determine fraud? Yeah right! As if that's going to happen!

Overall, food stamp fraud costs taxpayers about $750 million a year, or 1 percent of the $75 billion program that makes up the bulk of the department's total budget for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
Three quarters of a BILLION dollars in food stamp fraud annually, and it just now occurred to our government that perhaps a few rules should be changed???
This is absolutely disgusting! It's time to drop the hammer on the lazy, the losers, the criminals, and the otherwise non-productive members of American society.
Last year, about 850,000 people were investigated for possible food stamp fraud. About 2,000 stores were sanctioned for illegal conduct, and 1,200 stores were permanently removed from the food stamp program.
850,000 people! Is this what we've become as a nation? A nation of fraudulent leeches???
It's encouraging that fraud is being looked at. The other question is what percentage of cases of fraud were actually prosecuted? Everyone that "cheats" this way is flat out stealing from the taxpayer and from those in legitimate need. They need to be arrested and jailed to discourage this. We can start with anyone that sells an EBT card for cash, or anyone that has bought one and uses it.

I agree wholeheartedly. This type of fraud should incur severe penalities, including jail time and a lifetime ban on benefits. Slaps on the wrist don't change behavior.
With all the fraud going on within our Government and around the world, the only thing "disgusting" is solely being opposed to poor people frauding a corrupt Government to make extra money or feed their children.
Not saying I agree with any welfare fraud, but it's pretty sad when that's the only thing you ******* about.
I assure you, there are much worse types of fraud and corruption to get so upset over.
But, I guess then you wouldn't be able to so openly distance yourself from poor people and those you wish to express your disagreement with.
No kidding, this is child's play compared to the right wing machine raping the system to no end.
