Damn! I caught the typo right after I sent it off, thought about correcting it, then said, "Nah! No one'll pay much attention!" Good girl. Cheers to another beer for us.

If you read the thought provoking writings of Joel Kotkin, it's less of a California issue than a coastal urban (and urban coastal wannabe) elites issue.

Take any Scandosocialist or Allendeian abomination which gets set forth here and you can completely predict the subculture it came from.

I know a lot about it. I grew up in it. I live embedded in it.

Well, if you want real perspective on the human behavior behind how government came into being and why, and where it is likely going, you are well advised to study a bit of evolutionary anthropology and genetics and physiology -- particularly with regard to the shift from paleolithic hunter-gatherer to neolithic agriculture. This is where our species diverged from its biological nature acting integrally with our environment in healthy relationships -- to a path of self-destruction, disease, and stress -- and *cough* government (hence laws and regulations): the necessary evil that accompanies settled populations that exceed our natural Dunbar limit.

But heck, it's way more fun to just find fault with each other as though we knew our asses from our elbows and are capable of self-creation and determination.

Nevertheless, for the one or two of you who might be interested, I can highly recommend:

X2 on that one!

With the advent of High Fructose Corn Syrup, they manufactures could add more sugar at a lower cost.. By adding more sweeteners or salt and fat to processed foods and beverages, they found they could sell more, and profit higher.

IMO it is out of control. Consumers are tempted by this garbage everywhere... The results are in we are getting fatter and fatter, less and less healthy. We spend exponentially higher dollars on health care than other first world nations but only have mediocre lifespans....

I am 100% for banning big gulps... 100% for a fat tax..... The corn lobby gets huge government subsidies, way too big of a portion of the farm bill goes to these subsidies, which do little for the small to mid sized family farmer. The benefits go to the large industrial food giants. Who pump out this garbage that is making us fat and sick.. So they can have higher profits.

Paleolithic man lived in small bands, diversly spread, in a world of plenty: hunting and gathering: meat, fish, fruit, nuts, seeds, plants -- and suffered very little from any kind of infectious or non-infectious diseases ... with the advent of neolithic agriculture, diet switched to carbohydrate-rich calories and diseases began to cause widespread suffering. Paleolithic man, for example, had less than a 5% instance of dental cavities -- with even the earliest advent of neolithic agriculture, dental cavities shot up to 25% overnight in historical terms. Diabetes, cancers, and infectious diseases and plagues eventually took hold. With the decrease in physicality over the ensuing millenia, we exacerbated the problems until now we live in self-destruction mode pandemically by our own hand.

Oh well. Back to the drawing board? You'd have to go back without your Big Gulp. There is NO -- ZERO -- way around it. But but but *gasp* what about profitability!

So, should government legislate healthy behavior? Wouldn't be an issue if we lived within our natural bounds. But we don't. So, what business is it of government? Good question. Fascinating topic.

There are no true governmental answers. Government is not a natural state of being. Government occurred to cooperatively control the growing populations and densities and management of resources. Our species is not biologically designed to live in large, dense, static groups under "governmental" rules. But at this point we can't live without it. Damned if you do and damned if you don't. So, live with it as one of life's challenges to endure.

But, bottom line: California government isn't really any more evil or silly than any other ... it is simply foundering in the face of an impossible task.

Then just cut the subsidies and the corporate welfare.

Every Texas politician can easily answer YES to the "acknowlege a superior being" question. After all aren't all Texas politicians "superior beings"? Just ask them.
