We do have an alternative to the joke Republican Party and RINOs, which are not Republican at all.

It's the Libertarian Party--the ones that actually ARE Republicans, rather than current false-Republicrat Party that tries to fool idiots into thinking we actually we have a "choice."

The GOP has been hijacked.

You can always vote for candidates you prefer, even cross parties where needed. You don't have to vote for the party itself. Look for a promising Libertarian, send him ten bucks for encouragement.

Libertarian policies sound good at the beginning. And then there's reality.

Bingo! I looked into them several times and every time I came away with the same experience.

This is the internet where you have a high population of libertarians trying to convince people that they're right and have the numbers to be influential. I have some libertarian tendencies and have no problem with them in general, but I do find a lot of them to be dogmatic.

The purity of their philosophies is part of what makes them attractive, but it almost seems like a cult. If you dare to suggest that there's a role for government in anything but defense and the lower courts, you risk being excommunicated.

Well Romney and Ryan both support TARP, the bail outs, stimulus spending, federal intervention into the marketplace. Paul Ryan voted for Medicare part D and No Child Left Behind both of which were signed off on by a Republican President. John McCain, Paul Ryan, George W. Bush, and Mitt Romney all are soft on immigration and support what amounts to open borders and amnesty. There was a time once, around the turn of the 20th century and in to the middle of the 20th century that going to war for "democracy" and "humanitarian" reasons was the aim of the progressive left. Ron Paul supports free markets and limited government and he didn't win a primary or a caucus. In fact he lost badly to Mitt Romney who was, by proxy, the architect of Obamacare. Progressiveness has infected the GOP. There is no "mainstream" conservative party left in America there is only a left wing party and a center-left party.

That's certainly an interesting perspective. I seriously doubt most Republicans would call Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan 'progressives'. And I don't think I've ever heard anyone call the modern-day Republican Party a center-left party. You're the first.

Well to be fair I get a similar takeaway when I discuss small government policies with Republicans and Democrats. Anytime I suggest the government may be exacerbating the problem rather than helping it's like I cussed in church.

Well, I wouldn't look at you as if you cussed in church, but I might look at you like you're crazy.
