The death of the moderate Republican has been greatly exaggerated. Take a look at this thread about an effort by tea party-linked Sen. Mike Lee of Utah to get rid of some corporate welfare. I think it gives a pretty good index of where we are in terms of conservative R's vis a vis moderate R's:
Lee lost the fight by 330-93 in the house, 78-20 in the Senate. He was supported by 93 fellow R's in the House (out of 240 Rs) and 19 in the Senate (out of 47 Sen. R's) The lone non-Republican vote in support was Indy Sen Bernie Sanders of VT.
I think this provides a pretty good index of where we are right now.
Voting to extend corp welfare:
House
Dems: 100 percent in support
Rs: 61.25 pct in support, 38.75 pct opposed
Senate
Dems: 100 pct in support
Rs: 60 pct in support, 40 pct opposed.
So you can see we really have quite a ways to go before the 'superconservative' tea partiers and limited gov't proponents have the upper hand. Overall, the tea party faction is really only approx 25 percent of the legislature. We're working on it though, and at least the trend line is going in the right (pun intended) direction.
If you hold strong convictions, compromise is not possible, especially when those who seek to compromise are communists and RINO's.
The Tea Party dramatically shifted the congressional power structure in 2010, and they will finish the job in November. All this despite our communist, socialist, PC media doing their best to marginalized them.
I still say thet legislation should be introduced to change the name of the hjacked Republican Party since these new crazies do not have the integrity to do it themsleves. They in no way resemble the party of days gone by. It's like a group of four guys calling themselves "The Beatles" when they are actually third rate imposters with zero musical talent.

In a democracy, where people have lots of differing view points, compromise is ESSENTIAL.
You're describing something very different--an authoritarian system of government.

just 180 degrees off. What we have now is an authoritarian system of government, where Washington DC extends its tentacles into almost every aspect of our lives. What the tea partiers seek is a return to a limited form of government, where the overwhelming majority of decision making power lies with first the individual, then with the state & local gov'ts, and last of all with the folks sitting far away in Washington DC.
You can thank the uncensored internet, for exposing the take over of freedom in the USA.
Remember when it was the TV and newspaper media, controlling the outcome of elections.
The internet has exposed the governments media as misleading, with a goal of social engineering, using social justice.
* First, what do mean by the "government's media"? The government owns no media that I know of, except PBS which gets a small subsidy.
* The internet is periodically under attack from the right, and some corporate ISPs which want control of content for their subscribers. These attackers are kept at bay by government - at least so far.
* If you're saying that we need a free and unfettered internet, I certainly agree. We must be on guard against lobbying to turn it into just another corporate propaganda machine like the mainstream media. All this lobbying happens under the radar, out of sight. No more consumer-society apathy about either government or corporate power.

The Tea Party is a tool of, and in the pocket of, corporate billionaires. Can you guess why oil barons want a "limited government" rather than a "representative government"? Just take a moment to sort this out.
What makes you think that the oil baron Koch brothers have the same interests as you?
Carlos Mayans, a former Republican legislator and Wichita mayor once seen by almost everyone as a conservative stalwart, said he’s seen and felt the change over the past two years. “Not too long ago, I was called a Democrat by one of those superconservatives,” Mayans said, laughing. “I said, ‘Are you kidding me?’ ” He said what got him branded a Democrat was questioning the method used to select Republican Party leaders, who were nominated by a closed-door committee and presented to the rank and file as a slate of candidates . .
“Some of these people are not interested in any ideas but their ideas, and only people in their group are good people and everybody else is bad,” he said. “The interesting thing is the people who are playing the litmus tests have never done anything themselves … these people don’t have the political skills and experience, but a lot of ideology. People are mean to each other, and I don’t like it.”
He's absolutely correct, and the only ones that can fix this are the sane, rationale conservatives to take back the party. We have no one else to blame but ourselves for this demise, it is just as bad to do nothing as the guy giulty of doing bad things.

When the pendulum has swung so far to the left, it is only a matter of time before it starts to swing back to the right.
