I get what you're saying, that still doesn't tell us what % of religious giving goes to actual charity, and how much goes towards paying bishops, maintaining churches, paying for big screen T.Vs when the religious rock bands show up (not to mention paying those religious rock bands), etc.
Do you think the SPCA doesn't use money for operating costs?
The SPCA does probably use money for operating costs. However the SPCA doesn't use donations to finance mega malls, cattle ranches and Polynesian resorts, but hey I guess some people define charity different then others.
Think of all those people that are employed in the welfare industry - do you justify welfare by the amount of social workers it keeps employed - or would you wonder how that money could be better used?

The difference is taxpayers fund the welfare industry. What is funded by private donations should only be of concern to those making the donations and, to some degree, their recipients. In the latter's case what should be significant is what is done, not how much is spent. Are you planning to donate to the LDS?

There's no difference - I am not saying where people should be forced to give charity - I am merely saying that a lot of conservative charity giving isn't really charity.

I wasn't speaking of just church employees. That band playing the music is assisting in worship. That bigscreen TV is allowing those in overflow seating or those with crying children to worship or learn.

Depends on your deinition of charity. Churches help people to become better citizens.
