Must be some big shot Dems who are marathon fans. Put in the call. Or maybe the mob has the fix on and their "boy" is gonna pull the upset so yes we will race.
Having lived there this makes perfect sense to me. If there's anyplace in the US that basically gives a middle finger to whatever tragedy comes their way, it's NYC. It's a money-maker and an opportunity for positive media that NYC is fully functional for tourism and business. It's not New Orleans after Katrina, where pretty much everything was lost. Most of NYC is just fine.
While there are still lots of people affected by Sandy, this has little if anything to do with their fortunes.
Agree on the generators point - seems a ludicrous claim.
Exactly. And putting on this marathon illustrates just that.
If they do it or not, I don't really care. I don't live there, it doesn't affect me, let the NYers decide that...but don't ask me for any money since it's apparent they have some to waste.
Doesnt matter if MOST of NY is fine!! There are still enuff area that ARE NOT! Queens anyone???? Long Island!! Staten Island???
This marathon is just stupid!!
and if people get crazy enuff, are we putting the runners at risk?? I don't think I'd be running along in a marathon throwing back a cool drink of bottled water as I'm passing by people who've had no clean water for days!!
Thousands of NYPD officers will be reassigned along the 26 mile course. Thousands of officers that will not be in their regular assigned areas to stop crime and looting.
Two huge electric generators are being installed in Central Park for the marathon not being used to power pumps to remove water from subway tunnels.
I'm guessing the sponsors have something to do with this.
This is marathon season and most serious runners are probably booked for the next 6 months. If they delay even a few weeks they will have scheduling conflicts with other marathons.
Hotels would lose a lot of money even with a delay.
I am not there and can't gauge the mood of the city, but it does seem a very NY thing to do - there's almost a certain "Keep Calm and Carry On" cachet to it. And the event is a major cash infusion for the city. Postponing is not really an option - thousands of international runners are on the waiting list for years. It's cancellation or going on the assigned date.
It all depends on how the event is held, of course. If it's low-key, no-frills, we're here for the run and not the surrounding brouhaha, everything unessential goes to the residents - it could be uplifting. If it turns into slum-tourism, not so much.
I am very happy it's not my decision to make.
