Denny's to charge 5% 'Obamacare surcharge' and cut employee hours to deal with cost of legislation | Mail Online

Florida based restaurant boss John Metz, who runs approximately 40 Denny's and owns the Hurricane Grill & Wings franchise has decided to offset that by adding a five percent surcharge to customers' bills and will reduce his employees' hours.

With Obamacare due to be fully implemented in January 2014, Metz has justified his move by claiming it is 'the only alternative. I've got to pass on the cost to the customer.'

The fast-food business owner is set to hold meetings at his restaurants in December where he will tell employees, 'that because of Obamacare, we are going to be cutting front-of-the-house employees to under 30 hours, effective immediately.'
Genuine question - if Obamacare is not going into effect until January 2014, why is he cutting employee hours to under 30 in November 2012?

He should be happy for Obamacare. It doesn't sound like he can afford to care for his own employees. Looks like under the care of republicans he'd have no business at all. He obviously can't afford it.
Ahhhhhh. The words of someone who never has and never will own a business.

Anyone who believes the cost of employee provided health care isn't added to the end cost of product is dumber than a salted slug.

Every day I thank God I'm not one of them.

This fella with the restaurant is simply itemizing.

Like I said in the other thread, they're merely itemizing. Anyone who thinks the cost of employee provided health care isn't added to the cost of the end product is too stupid to live.

Yep. Itemizing.

I must be missing something important.
If he's cutting the hours so he won't be subject to the increased cost of providing coverage.........what's the 5% surcharge for?

This is the way I see it. I believe the “yes, we built that” crowd should invoice every customer the true price of the good/service and surcharge with regulatory fees - much like when you get a car rental receipt with “airport concession fee” “franchise tax re-coupment fee” etc. It would be a useful effort for the US Chamber of Commerce to support. The Obama voters have no idea what they’re supporting, let’s teach them!

Florida is one of the states which is allowed to pay its restaurant workers less than minimum wage because they are expected to "make it up in tips". Perhaps the state should bump up all its restaurant workers to actual minimum wage (something which exists in states like California which have no shortage of quality restaurants as a result).

Actually, you're but don't realize it. Someone told you that we're losing jobs to India because of NAFTA, chances are, you believed it. Someone told you that we couldn't compete with foreign countries because of higher statutory corporate tax rates, and you accepted that as a fact. Someone told you that a businessman can't create job because his top marginal rate is 3.6% higher and you ran around screaming like your life depended on it. Someone told you on a blog, TV or screamed on radio that you shouldn't trust the "liberal media" and you bought self a "I don't listen to liberal media" bumper sticker.

But that's you and people like you. The question is then... is it better to compete with foreign countries that have universal health care that costs them a lot less per employee than one here that costs a heck lot more per employee?

It is impossible to match y'all in being "Penny-wise, Pound-foolish".
