This is not a thread to slam a 47%er or to whine about the reason you are a 47%er. There are a lot of reasons people are in the 47% group. If you want to move out it is up to you to make the necessary changes. So like anything else you have to know where you want to go (and it has to be reasonable and reachable). You also have to decide what changes and actions you will take to get there. So I ask

Where do you see yourself financially 4-5 years from now if you keep doing the same thing?

Where do you want to go, financially?

If you plan on not being counted as a 47%er what is your plan to get out?

I'm not in the 47%, but in five years I hope to be in a work camp, crushing rocks for our Dear Leader!

That's the 47% that pay no income tax. Silly me, I thought that the conservative nirvana was to minimize all taxes. When the rich (err, "job creators") pay less taxes, that supposed to be good. When lower and middle class people pay less taxes, they are moochers.

Well, I'm not a 47%er but my Father is. He's 91 ~ retired military ~ collecting both retirement pay from the military, retired teacher pay, SS, and Medicare.

He's doing quite well, thank you.

He imagines that in 4 or 5 years - there will be no need for continued benefits.

Actually this started when people who are paying taxes were attacked as being told they were the enemy and that they were not paying their fair share. So what is fair when there are people who don't pay any taxes at all then say others who pay taxes are not paying their fair share. That's not right so what do you expect.

Ok, if you continue doing more of the same where do you see yourself 4-5 years from now?

Well to me your father earned his retirement. He contributed to society in many ways and also contributed to his own retirement. Hopefully in 4-5 years there will be a need for continued benefits.

But I asked, if you are a 47%er, where do you see yourself 4-5 years from now?

If you don't want to be a 47%er what are you going to do to change your situation?

No, it was a serious response. I retired this year. Last year I was on a leave from corporate world and did some paid work for a fraction of what I used to make. Got almost all of my taxes back in refunds.

No debt, rural living, little expense, much small income but more than enough for my lifestyle.
I'm probably at the top of that 47% but nevertheless, I'm there.

Our tax system is that messed up.
