It has come to my attention recently that modern-day Republicans have written books on the premise that "liberalism," or the "liberal mob" is what is responsible for the degeneration of modern American politics. Do such people really realize what classic liberalism really has been, though? Do they realize that 19th century liberals included among their ranks a man who resented the fact that poor people were allowed to procreate (Thomas Malthus) and that "to some hardhearted liberals, the Irish famine of 1845-49, which killed about 1.5 million people, was simply nature's way of dealing with Ireland's excess population" 1 Strains of Social Darwinism, usually thought of in modern America as a far-right ideology, can be found within 19th century liberal thought! Even one of our presidents Grover Cleveland, a late 19th century Democrat, thought that it was not the government's responsibility to help American citizens when they lost their jobs due to depression! In reality, classic liberalism is found on the right side of the political spectrum, and Ann Coulter and Michael Savage are classic liberals themselves! Ah, the irony

What we have grown accustomed to calling "liberal" in this country is really socialist, and I don't mean that in a bad way either. Ron Paul is a quintessential liberal in this country today (especially with his talk of removing all government intervention in the economy, even those government programs that offer help to those who need help), and presidents such as FDR, Lyndon Johnson, and Bill Clinton, who have helped to set right historical injustices against the poor, have each been classic socialists. Our current president is a true socialist as well.

Then again, I do realize that maybe modern politicians have revised the political spectrum to accomodate the fact that true "conservatives" no longer exist in American politics anymore. Therefore, those with the farthest right ideology are called "conservatives."

This is just a topic that's truly intriguing to me. Feel free to criticize or set me right if anything I've asserted is wrong

Do I think liberalism is the cause? Absolutely not.

It just progresses us to free fall speed.

Ron Paul supporter here

If by liberal you mean opposing women's right to choose , opposing the Civil Rights Act of the 60's, and allowing business to deny services to Blacks, then yes, Ron Paul is a liberal.

If by socialist you mean giving trillions of dollars in corporate welfare to Banks, then yes, Obama is a socialist.

it is the progressive agenda that is killing this country. we have just about kicked god out of our lives, we have cheapened life with on demand abortions, we have been told that we have to feel someones pain or understand their rage. in the mean time we have been forced to soften our language so that we dont offend someone. heaven forbid someone should tell an off color joke, they might be crucified. these days everything is a disease, a disorder, a dysfunction, or other form of dementia, and as a result no one has to suffer any blame for anything they do. feeling anxious? take these red downers. feeling depressed? take these blue uppers. these pills have bad side effects? no problem, we will add the white pill, the yellow, and the green pill to fix those issues. never mind that the side effects of all those combined meds make you worse off than you were before, but no matter, you just head on down to the lawyer, and sue the drug companies for millions, never mind the fact that they didnt prescribe the pills for you, the shrink doctors did.

and by the way, dont drink alcohol when you take these pills, but if you do, you can still sue the drug companies because they didnt warn you strongly enough.

the we get bombarded with all kinds of gratuitous violence in the movies, on tv, and in video games, and our favorite stars are the ones committing that violence. you see them die in one movie, and they are back for the next violent movie. and then, despite the fact that they use guns in the movies, they are loudly antigun when a school shooting happens. and when things die down, they go back to making the same old violent movies again.

and then our own federal government runs guns across our southern border where they are used by the drug cartels to kill innocent people down there. and when they get caught with their hand in the cookie jar they deny and cover up until the next crisis comes along and people forget the last one.

and then when we do end up prosecuting the criminals, most of the time they get a slap on the wrist, or early release due to good behavior and overcrowding.

It was definitely Clinton who put those two wars on the nation's credit card. Or was it?

Well, yes. Because we all know that Republicans don't drink, take drugs, have unwanted pregnancies, watch violent movies, etc.

Republicans are hypocrites.

I blame Congress. At one time, to call a politician a "party man" was a grave insult. It meant you put your party ahead of your country. Somewhere along the way, it seems to have become a compliment for politicians. A majority of members of Congress are "party men". They do what the party tells them to do so they can continue to receive logistical and financial support from the DNC & RNC to help them get re-elected. They value money and power over doing what's right for the country. To help get them re-elected, they bribe voters with money and services (social welfare programs). They worry more about what the press will say about them than about doing what is right for the country. Doing what's right isn't always easy to do. People will suffer in some way because you'll be making it harder for some by doing what's right. When the first stock market crashed back in the 1920s, instead of taking action, the President refused to act and the market made it's own corrections and began recovering naturally. The more the government gets involved, the worse things get. There's a reason why the framers of the Constitution specifically spelled out the duties and responsibilities of the government. It was to put limits on the government to prevent tyranny. Basically our nation's Congress has wiped their backside with the Constitution.

Liberalism isn't destroying America...spending beyond our means is. Conservatives as of late are just as bad if not worse for spending beyond our means. I don't care if our taxes go up or our spending goes down...we just need to manage our debt. Politics aside, if we don't get our outlays in line with our revenues our situation will deteriorate.
