Just like wealthy people recognize that luxury cars are more worthy than ordinary cars, they recognize that cities like New York, LA, and San Francisco have more amenities than Slaphog, Mississippi. Liberal cities invest in culture and education and don't roll up the sidewalks after dark. It all isn't about the lowest tax rate.

I would also give a shout-out to Boston, home of more institutions of higher education per square mile than any other U.S. city. Slaphog … not so much.

(You do owe me a Mac wireless keyboard for that one though.)

Go Sawx!!!!

Actually, California's economy is 14th in the world, just after Brazil. California has not had an economy that was the 7th largest in the world since before Jerry Brown was the "Moonbeam" Governor the first time during the 1970s.

California has the highest taxes and the worst services of any State in the Union. People and businesses have been fleeing California in a mass exodus to Arizona, Nevada, and other States for decades. It is truly one of the worst run States in the Union.

Some of those aren't in Boston - they are in Cambridge, Medford, or Wellesley.

The states that are run well according to this list encourage economic activity, don't punish achievment by taxing the engines of commerce, and enact fically sound policy that ensures that enough money is available for essentials.

Notice that the top two best run states are enegy producing states - and that energy isn't neccesarily all "green energy". Meanwhile the worst run state - California - recently enacted carbon cap and trade legislation.

The Midwest seems to have some good common sense - outside of Illinois.
How is a state well run if it has to be subsidized by the federal government?

But yeah, it's pretty hard to go wrong when your state has a low population, and a crapload of oil. That takes the keen mind of a conservative to make the situation work.

What is the middle? It's essentially the left wing of 50 years ago.
Being in the middle is not a claim to intelligence. It's more akin to being a lemming.
A truly thoughtful person may support a right-wing idea and a left-wing idea.
Personally, I don't like the political spectrum, since it's too limiting.

My state - MD - should rank lhigher in some repects for obvious reasons, one being the #1 employer in the state is the federal government and pays people unrealistically, it has lots of income. Too bad it is a pi$$ poor state with no real private industry. What is unsaid is only a half dozen counties enjoy the "highest" median income as they are away from the shadow of DC. The western and eastern regions of the state are impoverished in comparison.
The governor sucks and the state government is almost exclusively liberal democrats - Mikulski, Cardin, Hoyer and Cummings are from the state and my dem rep is a POS.
Look this over from this report.

26. Maryland
> Debt per capita: $4,250 (16th highest)
> Budget deficit: 15.3% (24th largest)
> Unemployment: 7.0% (15th lowest)
> Median household income: $70,004 (the highest)
> Pct. below poverty line: 10.1% (2nd lowest)
Maryland has the nation’s highest median household income at just over $70,000, well above the national median of $50,502. Residents paid 10.2% of their income in state and local taxes in fiscal 2010 — one of the higher rates in the nation. The state’s tax climate is also one of the worst for businesses, according to the Tax Foundation. Maryland was also one of the nation’s smallest exporters, shipping just $1,867 in goods abroad per resident in 2011, well below half the national figure of $4,752. As of August, tax revenue collections had exceeded the state’s Board of Revenue Estimates projections by about $225 million. This may help the state avoid a budget shortfall like the one it had in fiscal 2011, when it faced a $2 billion budget deficit, equal to 15.3% of that year’s budget.

Lol... true. Only the keen mind of a conservative could bury oil beneath his state 6,000 years ago to profit from later!

And, let's not forget all of this:

List of U.S. states by poverty rate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

List of U.S. states by educational attainment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

List of U.S. states by life expectancy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yep... Deep south not looking so good in any of those categories. Of course, the last time I posted this, people claimed the problem was that Wikipedia is run by "liberals"... while ignoring that the source of the information is the US census bureau, etc... Oh, well - anything that is not far-right wing is run by "liberals" and "communists," I guess.

Really stupid article. North Dakota is number 1. That has absolutely NOTHING to do with how the state is run. Go spend some time in Williston and tell me how great of a place it is. It's on there as the best run state because there happens to be oil under the ground. That really has nothing to do with how the state is run.

Also, things like debt per capita on their own don't mean much. A debt to revenue ratio would be a better metric. $1000 per capita of debt means a lot less in a rich state than in a poor one.
