So you are taking the playing dumb approach, that seems fitting. Why not have him eating an ice cream or an apple, what is the importance of the watermelon? Do I need to google that for you?
I call BS on the "I am a soldier so I can do what I want" mentality. Sure, a person in the armed forces deserves respect, but not any more so than anyone else. I don't see why a veteran should get a pass for doing something racists and we should come down on the police officer, firefighter, physician, nurse, lawyer or even the coffee shop worker who makes sure the police and EMS workers can get something to eat or drink in the middle of a night shift. He deserves the right to express his views free from government persecution, but that doesn't mean that everyone else shouldn't think he's an a-hole.
Like me, this man fought for this country in the Vietnam War and therefore we should respect him and his right to display this mannequin of Obama eating a watermelon in his front yard in Kentucky. From what I gather, the neighbors approve what he is doing and doesn't find anything wrong with it. I agree with them. As a soldier, he should be appreciated for practicing his freedom of expression. He earned it by wearing the uniform and taking a oath to defend his country and the Constitution.
"The way I look at it, it's freedom of speech," Hafley told LEX 18 in a recent interview, going on to state that he had included the watermelon not in attempt to play to any racist stereotypes, but because the statue "might get hungry standing out here."
Nothing offense here. MOST PEOPLE like watermelon.
sure it is, it's done all the time and people laugh, nobody calls it racism.
Doesn't make it okay, nor does racism. You can't change the world, but you can definitely change yourself.
