I thought it was bad judgement on the part of the paper, they should not have published the names, it only added to the divisiveness and accomplished nothing.

I agree, but it is still public knowledge and they did nothing illegal.

We should be more like Afghanistan, seems like they have a lot less guns floating around.
You can't prove that. Those people can forge a AK out of a few hub caps. There is no way to know how many guns they have over there period.

Just because someone is in the minority, we don't need to protect their rights???!!!
They have a protected right to have their guns. They don't have a right to not have something that is public record be publicly reported.

Lolz. Well first of all they resisted the Soviets because we armed and trained them. Secondly, geography is a big factor. Lastly if we wanted to we could occupy and control the country indefinitely if we wanted to. Let's not go making things up here like they resisted us because of their awesome power. Quite a few a soldiers werent killed or injured by firearms but by IEDs.

And no average citizens don't need military hardware here in America. Stupid idea.

This is not a far fetched question at all. If I'm seeking guns to steal certainly the place to start is list of people that own guns.

My second question is what benefit is there to anyone publishing this list?
Your guns should be in a secure area, like a gun safe, so they can't be stolen.

Why does a newspaper article need to benefit anyone? Maybe they were trying to make a point about rampant gun ownership in their community.

But if you scroll down that article you will see that only 34 % of Americans report that they own a gun. Household percentage is higher because someone might live with a person who owns a gun.

Why? It's legal. Do that with illegal stuff. Print the names of potheads and everyone will know where to steal weed.
