The Republicans are far from dead, and their move to the Right and More Right has served them well and will continue to. I think they will have control of the White House and Congress in the forseeable future...and then you will see how ugly a one-party nation can be.
The U.S. has major debt problems, horrible trade imbalance, etc, etc. and a large segment of the American public seems unable to deal with the fact that the U.S. will no longer be calling all the shots in the world. They will be suckers for a Rightist one-party nation.
The Dems have no center of gravity, they will be dead meat.
If a conservative one-party nation didn't happen under Bush I doubt you have anything to worry about. The nation as a whole has moved much, much farther to the left than it was under Bush. In 2001, Bush was very popular and it was still socially acceptable to support conservative social positions. People were living in fear of terrorism and national pride was at an all-time high. It was the perfect environment for a power grab, but it didn't happen. It will take a major cultural shift in this country to bring neo-conservatism back to relevance, let alone any threat of dictatorship.

No it os still pretty much in the middle like it has always been.
I'm failing to see to any righties in the Republican side. Are you referring to the ones that voted for obamacare, debt ceiling, cliff, and any other spending bill in front of them?
There is no lack of republican here, there is a lack of ethical thinking people.
Yes, to think that a mere couple of decades back, the Democrats had people like Larry MacDonald in their ranks, a man as, if not more conservative than Ron Paul is today.
With the resignation of Ron Paul, there are no true conservatives in american politics, at least elected ones.

Exactly. They talk BS about how conservative they are and vote for anything increasing spending. What amazes me is that people still believe them.

Agreed. Conservative Democrats for the most part don't exist anymore. If you take social issues out of the equation, even the GOP is pretty much Democrat-lite. Maybe that's why social issues are such a big deal, because without them there isn't much of a difference between the parties?
My grandfather was a lifelong Democrat who recently switched to the GOP because of social issues.

So you grandfather became a Republican because he doesn't like the gays? Guess that makes sense, the Republicans like to prop up that mentality.

That's what the Republican Party is becoming and is why its inching closer and closer to complete irrelevance. Far more moderate Republicans are becoming Democrats than the opposite. Another older friend of mine from California who was a staunch Republican since the Reagan era has switched to the Democratic party because of social issues.
