don't have a spending problem:

Stephen Moore: The Education of John Boehner - WSJ.com

Whew, what a relief, because I thought we had a major spending problem as a country racking up debt at an alarming rate, but at least we can eliminate spending as a problem.

Obama can't bring himself to admit we have a spending problem in the first place.

Republicans at least put forth and voted on an actual, real live budget that attempts to address spending issues. You might recall hearing about Paul Ryan's plan. The democrats have not put forth a budget in more than three years, so yes there is a difference. Of course, 51% of the people voted Mr. Fiscal Insanity back into office, so I suppose no one cares much.

So, what are we going to cut that's not going to result in the deaths of tens of thousands of people? We can cut the military budget, but we can't guarantee our boys and girls are going to all find jobs in the private sector, so invariably some are gonna end up on government assistance, defeating the purpose of cutting the budget.

So what about domestic spending? Well, kids need to go to school. We already have enough problems with our kids falling further and further behind in school and parents are not adept at homeschooling because none have the time to do it because they chose to live a lifestyle that they can't afford if one parent worked. So let's cut Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security instead. Well, I have to say to that fine, too bad if you died in the process. We don't have a spending problem, we have a revenue problem, and no one wants to tap the greatest source of wealth that is currently untaxed. No, that's not more income taxes or capital gains taxes. That's thinking inside the box.

The problem people have in this country is that everyone wants to cut the budget, except the parts that benefit me or the parts that I like. That's the cold, hard reality. You're not gonna get the budget cut, this was perfectly evident in the tea party rallies with lots of people holding up signs that say "Keep your hands off my Medicare and Social Security!". So, they want all of the budget cut, except the programs that benefit them. The liberals want the defense budget cut, but they don't want to cut entitlements. The military folks want entitlements cut, except the defense budget (which would tie in to include their Tricare, VA, and military pension) . And the circle jerking goes on and on and on

You do realize that all budget plans that the GOP submits don't actually cut the budget, they just cut future increases in spending? Might as well stop with the semantics and just declare a budget freeze for the next 10 years

Boehner says that his leverage is {R} support for the sequester is what they should have done in the first place. If he saw that Obama was not interested in any cuts that should have been the only avenue. The {R}s are in the same position they were in but were snookered into tax increases and extending UE. What is left? raise the debt ceiling and let the cuts take place.

Didnt he say he'd half the deficit in the first term?

So if it isnt a spending problem, what is it?

A growth problem? Obamas zero growth economy of stagnation?

The simplest way to cut spending is to cut the budget of every federal department x percent. Lets start at 5% just for discussion.

If EVERYONE takes a cut, then at least part of the whining is gone. No single group can complain their cut was worse than someone else's. The cuts can be entire programs, salaries, perks, contractors, etc.

I like it. It would be a start. Spending never actually gets cut though, in real terms. At best we might get a cut in expected future increases in spending, but in real terms spending always goes up.
