SAN FRANCISCO - City health officials took steps Thursday toward opening the nation's first legal safe-injection room, where addicts could shoot up heroin, cocaine and other drugs under the supervision of nurses.

Actually I think this is a good idea. It will help prevent overdoses, and with the needle exchanges it will prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS. The end result will be lives will be saved, and local counties and hospitals will probably save buckets of money.

How much money does it cost for the county to pay for the free healthcare of someone who has AIDS over the five, ten or fifteen years it now takes someone to die? If this can be prevented by opening up an area where these guys can be supervised by medical professionals then it's a win win situation.

actually when I lived in Sydney Australia, they had them there as well, they provided clean needles and a sterile refuge, they didn't ask questions what someone does in a booth, but it was more or less to curb the transmission of diseases, because they have a national health system.. it is all intertwind.. ANYWAY... so this is not new news for me.. but I think that these people have problems and need help.. they don't need to be thrown into a prison system.. and they CERTAINLY do not need means provided for them to continue their drug abuse... One could argue that they are going to do it anyway, atleast these "shoot up" places are providing a safe alternative... I'm torn, because I can see both sides, and I can side with both viewpoints.. so my opinion would be to offer the safe shootup place, and provide whatever services are needed to HELP them get off of the drugs as well....by whatever intervention is acceptable under the law..

This is a very bad idea and it shows that we totally lost our moral values. Heroin, cocaine, and the other drugs these guys shoot up are ILLEGAL.. They should not have a nurse assist them in their drug use, instead they should have a police officer arresting them and sending them to jail where they belong.

Most of these addicts can't be helped, they are rotten, corupt souls. The only chance they have to get off drugs is to send them to prison where drugs are prohibited.

The article claims these shooting galleries help save these guys from overdosing. I say this is unnatural. If these individuals choose a needle drug shooting lifestyle they deserve the consequences, including death.

Do you honestly think that drugs are unavailable in prison?

Spoken like somebody who probably hasn't known (closely) or been an addict... they aren't "rotten, corrupt souls," and to say that is very cruel. I'm not saying they're all good & pure, but most are UNDER THE INFLUENCE of an addiction - doesn't mean they're bad people underneath. Anyone can become an addict, as I could prove with personal stories, but won't do so here.

As the above poster said, do you really think drugs aren't prevalent in prisons?? I've heard they are MORE readily available, not to mention much stronger and more dangerous. Meanwhile, the taxpayers are paying something like $25K a year to keep them in prison, where they're probably just as high. They're much better off in a medically-supported rehab, especially one that includes full psychological counseling and after-care.

Shooting galleries? Suddenly I'm picturing wooden ducks, LOL. But really, I don't think their main concern is with overdosing, but rather the spread of AIDS... which can affect innocent people, such as the children & partners of the addicts, and everyone else they're involved with - ya know, the old "chain" they taught you about in sex ed? So in my opinion, anything that reduces the number of AIDS and Hepatitis cases is a good thing, even if it might seem otherwise at first glance. Do I think they need to be offered help as well? Absolutely. But in the meantime, I'd support any group that helps reduce diseases and sick people (whom we'll end up paying for in the end).

Actually, gizmo, JayF probably does know an addict or a junkie. Most everyone does. However, JayF also seems kind of narrow-minded and therefore, probably can't truly see the addict that he knows.

I mean, if he believes an addict is a corrupt soul, it will be lost on him that a friend or family member could be an addict.

JMO If the Feds shut down the smoke shops I don't see how they could allow this and honestly I can't see to many addicts showing up, I don't think they will take the time to plan a trip to shoot up.

There's money in this: done under public health plans...he who get there first will get the lions share of all that money. Our drug culture has been built since the 60's. The 'Beatles' gave it its big start..it's either legal of illegal drugs...take your pick..Its like emptying out the bottom of the barrel. As these places close down in Holland and Europe, they will be needed in other areas of the world...Why not San Fran...Look at it!
It's a disaster...socially, culturally...It's the perfect place for this...It will clean them out of Portland...they will move back south, where they came from....I think I'm for it.
