C'mon Dem's - we are talking about a great man here - not your party's mascot.
They claim him because they've latched on to Nixon's Southern Strategy to claim that there was a magical flip where Democrats transformed from racists to champions of all that is good and noble, and Republicans flipflopped from decent human being to raging racists. To them, this election strategy used in one campaign completely and irrevocably altered the entire political philosophy of the whole nation. And I am not exaggerating. You can do a search on southern strategy in this forum and you'll see that is precisely what they claim, as completely nonsensical as it is.

They are talking about Martin Luther King, Jr. I doubt many of us know who Michael King was. I have no clue who he is.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was not killed by a gun - he was murdered by James Earl Ray.

That is entirely false.

The Democratic Party of the 1950's and 1960's was overtly racist - which you yourself have as much as admitted.

The nation has moved on since the passage of the Civil Rights movement - and neither party condones racism, but the Democrats sure like to shamelessly claim that nothing has ever changed.

They are the only people who focus on skin color.

Republicans acknowledge Dr. King's dream of judging people by the content of their character.

Stop regurgitating liberal lies - and begin to think for yourself.

Can't you for once discuss an issue on its merits rather than use hyperbole and ad hominem attacks?

Check your facts-I know that's tough a thing for conservatives to do- a majority of Democrats an overwhelming majority if you exclude southern Democrats supported the CRA.

A better question would be why are conservatives embracing MLK when they opposed the civil rights movement? The fact is conservatives of both parties voted against CRA. You have obvious examples like Strom Thurmond. You have people like Jesse Helms who at the time was a Democratic city council member in Raleigh saying "the civil rights movement was infested by communists and moral degenerates". Southern Democratic CONSERVATIVES like them opposed the CRA and when it passed they left the party.

This is really nothing, but a thinly veiled attempt to give modern conservative Republicans credit for votes by liberal/moderate Republicans.

The original House version:
Southern Democrats: 7–87 (7–93%)
Southern Republicans: 0–10 (0–100%)
Northern Democrats: 145–9 (94–6%)
Northern Republicans: 138–24 (85–15%)
The Senate version:
Southern Democrats: 1–20 (5–95%)
Southern Republicans: 0–1 (0–100%)
Northern Democrats: 45–1 (98–2%)
Northern Republicans: 27–5 (84–16%)

Only when it's convenient to make a non-existent point. They'd probably have nice things to say about the prophet Muhammad and Malcolm X if it fit the argument.
