Well, the order was placed by the ICE/Mission Support -DC Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office of Acquisition Management. And it's up to 7K weapons over 4 years. Only $30,000 and the first year of the contract is guaranteed to be fulfilled.

Shrinking the size and the weight of the kit is why the assault rifle was designed in the first place, as soldiers have exactly the same needs.

Any small weapon is more easily concealed. Concealment may not be the primary purpose that the DHS needs in it's weaponry. The two do not go hand in hand automatically.
I can see why a Democrat in denial would think this way. Doesn't the average Joe also have a need to "move around and confront many unknowns?" But the Average Joe can't have this gun.

I could see ICE getting them. They do get up close and personal with the cartel members.
And I read they are going to an ICE training facility.

Yeah..I can see how they would be useful to ICE. The cartels have established themselves in the US.

They don't need to stockpile, there will be no ban and no shortage of ammo. Heck, maybe we can even pick up those surplus assault rifles dirt cheap at government auctions....

The Dept of Transportation did not provide their weapons nor their vessels, the DoD (Navy) did.
They use standard military issue non-lethal weapons while conducting peacetime missions.

United States Coast Guard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Coast Guard is a maritime, military, multi-mission service unique among the U.S. military branches for having a maritime law enforcement mission (with jurisdiction in both domestic and international waters) and a federal regulatory agency mission as part of its mission set. It operates under the Department of Homeland Security during peacetime, and can be transferred to the Department of the Navy by the President at any time, or by Congress during time of war.

The DHS doesn't order cutters for the USCG do they ? DoT didn't do that; USCG got their cutters through the Navy.

With the USCG being a military branch, it's just logical that they have the same choice of weapons as other military branches because in times of war the USCG has augmented the military overseas (like in Vietnam). To arm them with a "personal defense weapon" like an AR is just plain stupid if you think about it. USCG keeps their munitions locked up and you get issued arms if you are on patrol or standing guard.

Logic should tell you that no military branch should have these personnel AK weapons.
Maybe Border Patrol or ICE.

Purpose - U.S. Department of Defense Non-Lethal Weapons Program
U.S. Coast Guard Non-Lethal Weapons Information - U.S. Department of Defense Non-Lethal Weapons Program

DoD Weapons Procurement 2013 (USCG is there under Navy for cutters and weapons).

http://www.finance.hq.navy.mil/FMB/13pres/WPN_BOOK.PDF

also look up OPNAV INSTRUCTION 4000.798 which was put in place to keep the USCG up to par with the Navy.
So unless Janet is ordering guns for the Navy the Coast Guard won't get them.
Today they are under DHS and the president or Congress can change that, and you can insist they get their stuff "through the navy", whatever that means, but the truth is they have their own budget and they order their own stuff. Right now they are ordering new "National Security Cutters" from Northorp Grumman, who has offered similar design for the Navy as well, but the Navy was not interested. So, if the cutters are coming "though the navy", then so be it, but I don't know what that means. [SIZE=3]
