The first two presidents of what could really be considered the Internet age are George W and Obama. Yes the Internet existed with Clinton, HW Bush, and earlier, but it wasn't the same prior to the new Millennium. Prior to these two presidents, there have been tons of conspiracy theories (most notably the alternate shooter in Kennedy's death)...but I think recently there is a lot more noise surrounding the conspiracy theories due to the prominence of the Internet and 24 hour media.

The "9/11 truthers", "Birthers", and now the "Sandy Hook Truthers" are all equally as crazy, but they're still garnering attention from all over the place. My question is do we think this will become the new normal? Will each president have well-advertised conspiracy theories to go along with their terms as president?

Also, if this is going to be the new norm, what's the reason? Are people really losing their minds, are they just bitter about the opposite party winning and need to justify it by crediting something sinister...or is it both?

There is questioning authority and then there is just being a drooling idiot. Believing conspiracy theories despite a complete lack of evidence or even a logical thought pattern behind them is not questioning authority. It is being retarded.

Honestly, I think the distrust in our media and government fuels conspiracy theories. Whether the conspiracies are accurate or not is not the issue, I believe they spawn from the distrust.

No, I think many psychologists would struggle to find a link between raw hatred and conspiracy, and I'm not even sure they derive from the same part of the brain.

Birthers prove that blind hatred can be the root of a conspiracy theory. Nearly every claim they've made has originated from their hatred that a black man occupies the White House.
