Bill? Oh...He had some moral issues. Russians would not even do business with him back in 1998 because of his inability to chose who he wanted to f. lol He is a human though. So, I won't be too harsh.
The creation of our plethora of social problems instigated the long and winding road we've seen towards financial instability. This isn't an amazing feature of American society...it's going to spell the end of it. Public debt is already well over the agreed upon percent (90) of GDP that begins to effect economic growth. This trajectory can't be sustained.
Ok, yeah, fine...the economics of it are hard to justify at times...
But where I grew up, people starve to death...the whole concept of going to the government because you couldn't feed yourself...that was laughably absurd. Going to a place where they'll work with you if you're homeless....that's a luxury I didn't even know people would ever be willing to provide to you. I look around, and I'm like "What the hell is this? Why is everyone here so nice?" Even the poor are full, clothed and sheltered.
Have you ever seen a naked guy wandering around begging for food? I have...
Trust me when I say it's an amazing thing that you don't know that reality. I don't know if it can be sustained...but the fact that it ever existed, if only for the 80 years that it did (assuming it ends tomorrow), that's an amazing thing.
Clinton was not and is not great. He was competant though. Like most politicians though, he is always willing to stand by the party instead of being truthful and such.
After repealing Glass-Steagal and other legislation, nah, not so much. a lot of Clinton's credit comes from a Republican congress that pushed him in the right direction, and the fraudulent dot.com financial bubble.
The Republicans pushed him to repeal Glass-Steagal and deregulate the financial service industry.
I don't think I would label Clinton as a "great" president any more than I would bestow that label upon Reagan. That said, under Clinton we were far less divisive and the nation was doing MUCH better since it has since his administration.
I always thought the whole thing started to fall apart under GWB and the "you're either with us or you're against us" mentality. We, as a nation, still embrace this mantra and Obama hasn't been able to help us get over it.
So, in that respect, Clinton was certainly better than anything we have had since. I will say that I believe that the internet, by allowing every crazy nut job to spread opinion to millions, has had a very detrimental effect on the way we treat and regard each other. Now, everything is a controversy - and that includes events that you would have never heard about just a few years ago.
The last great President the U.S. has had was Dwight Eisenhower.
Hey look, someone agrees!
