Because more than 4 months of conservative posturing, whining, faux outrage, and snark all amounted to nothing. It demonstrated how the GOP leadership doesn't set their agenda, it's instead dictated by a handful of journalists that whip up fear and loathing among the party base. They knew they were destined to fail but couldn't admit it for fear of looking weak in the eyes of the neocons, so they just went through the motions.

Unable to show any leadership, the GOP is just the party of (ineffective) opposition.
