No I don't think it's strange, I think there is more understanding of gender dysphoria now. There is a big difference between being a tomboy, a gay woman, and transgendered. And vice versa of course.

I think in the past people with gender dysphoria often had difficult childhoods and formative years. Why make people endure decades of misery when help is available for them?

For anyone that is genuinely interested:

I'd highly recommend Wayne Maines blog in HuffPo:

Wayne Maines is the proud father of identical twins, one a boy and one a girl. He is an Air Force veteran, typically a reserved and conservative man, whose values and beliefs were tested when one of his twin boys said, "Daddy, I am really a girl." He has recently started to share short stories about his families journey and his experiences discovering the joys that come from listening and learning from his young children.

Then what is going on that genes are so messed up in kids today.
Something is up..is the water that polluted and we're putting that much chemicals in our bodies that fetuses are not developing properly ?

Usually there's a reason when a species starts morphing at birth.
And in the long run that can lead to extinction.

Umm, I guess my post wasn't clear. This is not an epidemic, it's just that previously people were more inclined to live a lie, and now thankfully with increased knowledge and resources, there is no reason for people to live a lie and be unhappy.

This is another reason why IMO the big school system should be scrapped and we should go back to small, neighborhood schools again and mostly funded by states and local communities. Let's get the Federal Government and their agenda out of public education.

It's pretty simple. Even Mikey gets it:

So, the debate is:

Some people state that gender is a social construction, one that is imprinted on a boy/girl as they grow up; basically boys play with trucks and dirt, girls play with dolls and cook. Some people are against this stereotyping and state that in reality, both males and females are equal in terms of natural interests; so a boy can be interested in dolls and a girl can be interested in trucks.

This counters this situation where the parents have stated their kid identifies with a stereotype; so it is either, boys and girls have innate differences including who plays with what, and what careers attract them; or it is that the gender roles are just imprinted from birth, so in this case, it is the parents that have taught their kid to act like a girl.

As for the restroom deal; get over it. Your kid is a male, there are restrooms for males and females; these segregated facilities have nothing to do whether you act like a male or female, or if you share the same interests as a male or female. If the kid is offended by going to the male restroom, why should there be no regard for those offended by this kid going to the female restroom?

This is the big problem I have here. The school tried to make accommodations. They offered three options.

Kathryn Mathis said she got a call "out of the blue" from the school in December saying that Coy could use the boys' bathroom, gender-neutral faculty bathrooms or the nurse's bathroom, but not the girls' facilities.

But the parents weren't happy because it might make their kid uncomfortable but they had absolutely no concern for the other kids that might be uncomfortable with someone with a penis in the girls rest room.

I can't use the womens rest room simply because I say I am more comfortable using it. I will get arrested. This kid is not being discriminated against. He is being treated just the same as everyone else.

This is absolute mental abuse on this child by his parents. No way in hell a 1st grader should be worried about whether they are a boy that should be a girl.

The parents are looking for attention and special treatment for their kid.

Parenting is really different these days. IMHO, the parents of the child need to make him dress like a boy for school. If they so desire, he can dress like a girl at home or when with them elsewhere. It should be this way until they have a bathroom exclusively for transgenders or until the child has a sex change.

Sexual identity and gender identity are two different things. I know a gay man who got into his first fight (and won) about a week after he learned to walk, refuses to listen to any music that doesn't sound like the soundtrack to smashing someone's brains in and works as a diesel mechanic...and he is only a mechanic because an injury forced him to quit the army. Your average lumber jack is more feminine then him, and yet he's never been interested in women.

At the same token, plenty of biological men are still attracted to women, even if they themselves are transgender women.

Dude, of course their were people with gender identity issues, gays etc back in the 50s...only difference is then they would either be given electro-shock therapy (that didn't work, btw) or be ridiculed until they committed suicide.
