American culture has changed. A lot of people accuse Republicans of wanting a theocracy or wanting to enforce religion on the populace. I understand why its perceived that way but that is not the truth. American culture has moved away from Christian values. 30 years ago, even if one wasn't a Christian, many of the social values they held were still comparable with Christianity. Most people were against gay marriage, even the non-religious. Today, mainstream American culture and Christianity are at complete odds. Republicans insist on clinging to the Christian culture of the American past while mainstream America, especially the younger generation, has moved on into the post-Christian era. The Republican party has refused to embrace this new post-Christian reality. Its understandable due to the demographics of the GOP being mostly old white men who grew up in a time when Christian values were still American values. I don't believe the Republicans will have a chance with young people or minorities until they embrace the new America. In a democracy, our leadership is a reflection of the people. Republicans can't expect a strong champion of Christian values to win in a post-Christian nation.

Just remove Christian, and retain values. "American culture has moved away from values", the very thing that made this country great.

So you'd rather us be stuck in a 1950s era America than being one of progress and change? I mean sure, the President isn't the greatest, but to think that we've gotten away from values is over-reaching.

It's a pendulum, soon enough it will swing back the other way, as it has for hundreds of years.

America is currently in a state of reverse progress - the middle class being taxed to death to pay for welfare programs for everybody else.

They just became too extreme for most of America to stomach. Also, no, contrary to what you hear the right wing telling itself in its own echo chamber... Becoming even more extreme, going even further to the right, getting even further away from the average voter will not make them more likely to vote for you. Nor will trying to sell the same old poop with just a new wrapper work so, no, Mr Prebius just talking about legitimate rape with a smile on your face won't work either.

The truth, which Republican extremists are desperately trying to avoid admitting, is that they're actually going to have to change/moderate their proposed policies so that they get closer to the policies voters actually want to see enacted. The extremists will cry crocodile tears and scream their heads off but that is what needs to happen if they actually want to WIN elections.

Yep, I think we will see the fall out from this silliness soon. Their "the floggings will continue until morale improves!" approach to change is kind of pathetic to watch.

Actually, current taxes are the lowest they have been in decades and welfare programs have been scaled back.

What values do you speak?

We didn't lose our economic morality. We were the victims of politics, as tax cuts were pushed without worrying about the ramifications.
