Washington governor signs gender-neutral legislation | The Daily Caller

Quote:
By replacing terms like “fireman” with “firefighter,” “ombudsman” with “ombud,” “journeyman” with “journey level,” “freshman” to “first-year,” and “policeman” to “police” Washington is eliminating words that could be considered to have a gender bias.

“Words matter,” said Liz Watson, a senior adviser to the National Women’s Law Center, according to Reuters. “This is important in changing hearts and minds.”

Washington state was awesome until the late 70s when half of California moved there and brought their whiney ways and goats with them

I got an earful when I addressed a Christmas card to my "postman" who wasn't a man

I put "To the Postman" on a card attached to a box of chocolates for Christmas and put in the mailbox.
Got a note with "I'm not a man. Thanks for the candy" and she signed her name.
She didn't get any more Christmas presents from me.

I can see it now.

Firepersons.

Policethings.

A fireman (male or female) is a person who fights fires.

A fireperson is someone who starts fires.

If you were a female firefighter, how would you like to be called fire-MAN all day every day

A firefighter is a firefighter, a police officer is a police officer.

Change is good

It is irritating. As one example, the other day I was writing a decision (I write for administrative law judges on disability cases) in which the claimant, a woman, testified about her past work as a 'waitress'.

I wrote: "The claimant testified that she worked as a waitress", but the red squiggly line appeared underneath 'waitress'. It was not misspelled, but the word program wanted me to change to 'server'. The same thing happens with some other words I tend to use (salesman, etc) .

I will note that at work, where this occurs, I am using a new version of Office Word (2013); my 2007 version, here at home, does not moan about my use of such words.
