Do you think 90 % of Americans would support 10 year mandatory prison sentences for criminals who commit violent gun crimes?
Why aren't our politicians talking about this?
There are many repeat offenders out there, and putting them behind bars would make the stats go down, Right?

You have to remember, our system doesn't want to punish actual criminals. Locking up criminals actually costs money. The focus is to create more criminals, but primarily those that can be fined rather than locked up. None of the proposed gun control laws is aimed at criminals in any way.

Your idea would be effective. I have also suggested a 10 year mandatory sentence for the theft of a firearm, or (under certain circumstances) possession of a stolen one. It is already a federal felony for a convicted felon to posess or attempt to posess a firearm...yet that is rarely prosecuted. If the feds enforced the existing laws, many of the repeat criminals would be locked up right now.

I think mandatory time for any violent crime, whether it was with a whiffle ball bat or a gun.

I agree with this.
One of the things we have to do in this country is be harder on criminals.

I've heard Bill O'Reilly propose this. Have all the (registered) guns you want, be in possession of one during the commission of any crime and do 10 years Federal time, no excuses, no time off for good behavior, no early release.

I agree.

Yeah definitely. They'd rather lock people up for longer periods of time for a victimless crime like drug use, or possession! Easy money.

I'd even go for 2 years mandatory good old fashioned, chain gang, breaking rocks in the hot sun, hard time.

OK make it 5.

I agree.
And most people agree with you too. Except agreement and putting the rubber to the road are two totally different things.

Our prisons are overcrowded as it is. People want stiff, long sentence's for all sorts of crimes. Lock them up!!! Great. Who is going to pay for it? Do you want your taxes raised to finance the prison industry? Yes, I know the replies: Let out the non violent drug offenders. That isn't going to happen. There is a large segment of our population who want drug dealers IN JAIL. Alot of drug dealers were armed when committing their crimes, so now what?

On paper, it sounds great and looks even better. In practice, the issue falls apart. Sort of like gun control to begin with.

The average cost for incarceration in my state is about $44K a year. The Illinois prisons are bursting at the seams. It's time to outsource to other states/nations than can do it for less.

Until the majority of drug laws are changed/repealed, you aren't going to see space opening up anytime soon. Now if the changes are made, their would be plenty of room to increase such penalties.
