Obamacare already does put healthcare squarely in the hands of private insurance companies with generous tax payer funded subsidies given directly to the insurance companies.
There is no public option, except for the bottom earners who might qualify for Medicaid.
That is true, but it does set the groundwork for it. How hard would it really be to put a Medicare option into the list of Exchange choices? People would be able to get that minimum yet significant level of coverage for the least cost possible. The Medicare option premiums would reflect the cost only and the numbers of people in that pool, would insure those cost are a low as possible. It will take a while to get there as Ins Ind is very powerful in DC and not just with Repubs. That is where we come in, electing people who will recognize that.

People buying medicare will never pay the true cost, they will want it financed with deficits. People don't even like paying insurance companies that just invest the premiums.

How about, if nearly everybody was buying their drugs thru a Medicare plan.... what impact might that large a block of purchasing consumers have on the price of Pharma products? What impact might the establishment to good medical practices based on results rather than frequency of procedures, have on the amount spent on scans, etc?
Breaking news **** HC to go back to the control of Ins Cos... you know, because they did so well in keeping the cost down and all.. well, if it were up to the Repubs that is.

I'm not opposed to negotiated drug prices, other countries do it.
Big pharma has a government sanctioned monopoly and high barriers of entry. Once they develop a drug they can charge whatever they want until the generics come onto the market. Americans pay high prices and other countries get to piggyback on our spending and R&D investment. In my opinion, if drug companies can afford advertising and afford to sell in other countries at a fraction of the cost then they can afford to lower American prices. If this means other countries pay more or go without then so be it. They can always come to the USA and buy drugs if they want.

I don't know what to make of this part of the article....
