Big deal. It is not like the victims were going to use the copper and the wiring to rebuild is it? It was all scrap that would have been landfilled or sent to China. At worst, some recyclers and Chinese got cheated out of the windfall profit.
This happens regularly. We've been through several disasters and there was looting every time.
People that have never been through it don't understand the feeling behind this. The stuff may be garbage but its still their garbage not to he stolen by others. It's highly offensive especially during such an emotionally charged event.
We had a flood in my area almost 2 years ago now. The scavengers were out of hand, I don;t mind some guy making a buck but firstly they were in the way and secondly they were taking stuff they shouldn't have been. My brother put out his new washer and dryer in his back yard, they took them...
There was a few copper thefts in homes, a worker for contractor got caught stealing jewelry etc.
My buddy had a store and lost about 200K in merchandise, it was selling it for half price. These were all hand tools etc. Little rusty and dirty but who cares... We caught two people trying to steal stuff. The second guy left with a dent in his car with an imprint that said size 12 Red Wing, he's lucky it wasn't on his face. At that point the cops didn't even care becsue they were just as fed up with this scum of the earth.

Big deal? Perhaps they wanted to scrap the copper themselves?
It doesn't matter it's their property, I've been the victim of house fire and the insensitivity of some people is astounding. It's still your home, I had a guy walk through my front door and hand me his business card after the fire. He's lucky he didn't get thrown down the steps, he was within two seconds of getting his ass beat to death.
