I know about 40 people from Sweden, and they have told me numerous times that income taxes there are 50%, not the 32% number you allude to.

now remember, if we went by the letter of the law, then we as Americans could just not pay into the system because it is supposed to be a moral law and not an actual law.

We dont want an extremely generous welfare system. That not to say that we dont want to take care of the impaired infirm and elderly but an extremely generous welfare system is something they can keep.

Sweden has a progressive tax rate, just like we do.

yeah, stupid tax rate, make it a tax rate of 3% across the board, and many Americans would not mind paying it...no deductions of course.

Sure, but watch out for the sales tax rate, then...

Some employee and other benefits in Sweden;

* 18 months paid maternity leave (Usually shared between both parents)
* ~ $160/month for every child until age of 16 or until completing high school
* Free dental and health care until age of 18 (or very small payment for adults)
* Free college education (Small payment for books)
* Great unemployment and retirement benefits
* 5 weeks of paid vacation annually for all workers + lots of paid sick days & holidays
* Free school and school lunch for all students
* Elderly care (Retirement homes and home care)
* Most workers belongs to Union

Social security benefits in Sweden;

* Bostadsbidrag - Housing allowances for anyone who cannot afford housing.
* Sjukpenning - Benefits if you are ill or disabled and cannot work.
* Ã…lderspension - Benefits for those who have retired.
* Försörjningsstöd - Benefits for anyone, including children who cannot get reasonable standard of living.

Unemployment rate:

Norway 3.7% -- Sweden 8.4% -- Finland 8.1% -- Denmark 7%

If they have all these privileges then why does Sweden remain such a chronically depressed state with high suicide rate?

Norway takes 41% of the nation's GDP in government revenue.

This is possible because per capita exports are eight times greater that those of the US and most of those exports are petroleum.

List of countries by exports per capita - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Norway exports 4.5 times more petroleum per capita than the US.

In fact, they beat the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Libya, Angola, Venezuela, Iraq, Canada, Iran, Russia and a stack of other countries we normally associate with petroleum exports.

I was going to say the weather, but we have the same suicide rate as them. South American countries have low suicide rates though.

I would bet that is tied to strong religious beliefs.

they do live good quality lives however their countries lag in terms of growth.. in order to pay for all this, the taxes everyone pays is eye watering.. its almost 80% if you add everything up.. if their residents only have 20% of your income to spend, their economy is pretty much being choked.. that also explains their high suicide rate. if i got robbed of 80% of my hard earned money every year, i would lose the will to live.. there are countries that enjoy ample economic growth as well as a good quality of life and low unemployment, without being a welfare state and taxing the hell out of their citizens.
