Shallow pop culture can be found nearly everywhere.
Most every modern country has it.
It's nothing unique to the US.
But it is worse. When some new study comes out on olive oil, Greeks will keep doing whatever it is they were doing with olive oil. Not so with American who have no essentially grounded culture.

Culture= music, art, writing, culinary customs, dress, and those other attributes of a particular people or region. In our country we have a "commonality culture" composed of all things TV, that's to say TV has the most influence on America, way more than religion or ethnic customs. Go to the malls and see the new arrivals gasping over the sheer amount of "stuff" that has become a ho-hum part of our consumerist society. The children of these new arrivals quickly pick up on the newest fads and thus become "full American's" in a very short time.
When I see the obvious new arrivals from Asia or India I'm always wondering how they size up this nation with regard to our customs. It's obvious to most of us who've been here a long time that our "culture" is really a composite of pop culture emulation, having a public "image" seems to be very popular these days complete with the proliferation of tattoos and other persona badges commonly worn by so called celebrities. Sports, another huge American icon is certainly near the top of the pile when we think of celebrity worship. Gone are the days when we celebrated those who made real contributions to society, our new heroes are from the big screen or the sports arenas. I am glad that a certain portion of our heritage from the various Euro nations has been salvaged, Blue grass music, Celtic dancing, and then we have our own homegrown Jazz and Blues that differentiate this nation from all others.
Pop culture isn't just an American thing, most of the developed world now embraces a culture of self indulgence that mirrors the TV mentality of mindless consumption and a never ending need to be entertained. I don't know that all this hyper-consuming way of life will last forever, it's part of a relatively new (100 years) wave of resource wasting that probably has seen it's best days gone by, now we'll have to figure the path to our future with less and less natural resources and that will have a huge impact on America as well as the other industrialized nations..
I can't listen that without pain, old geezers in their late 50s amaze be by being able to listen through that screeching cacophony of sounds.
Turn TVs off, interrupt centrally distributed flow of mass-cult, what would be left of American culture? Rat race, I guess. Let's take that away, what's left? Shopping and the rest of joys of consumption. Take a TV, mass cult, work and shopping away, and there is not much else to culture. In all honesty, whole rotten global world is just like that.
Most of the traditional US cultures are in danger of dying out not from Mexicans, but from the tyranny of pop culture from within.
And some traditional US cultural forms are valued more outside the US than inside the US, like jazz and blues.
