The Wild Card - By Kirk Spitzer | Foreign Policy

"What the nationalists want is to take Japan back to some utopian vision of the 1930s that never really existed....He raised eyebrows further when he led "Banzai" cheers for the emperor and empress during a Sovereignty Day ceremony in April, drawing a look of surprise -- if not outright disapproval -- from the imperial couple." -Foreign Policy Magazine

Countries like Japan and China are highly nationalistic and think they are the superior nation. Abe yelling Banzai is like Merkel yelling Sieg Heil...China has the exact same thing -wansui which holds a similar connotation to thousand year reich (10,000 year kingdom). Yet, the world doesnt give a **** when Japan does it. If Merkel were to ever deny Germany's role in WW2 like Abe denies Japan's role, the west would go bat**** crazy...

Why is there such a hypocritical taboo on nationalism on the west? Why can other nations, who have caused the greatest atrocities in history glorify the "good ole days?" But a Greek Soccer player can't even do a Roman Salute?

I'd say nationalism is well and alive. Look at the people who say they do not care what happens else where just save the money and spend it on me.The sense of some given right to the worlds wealth that a Chinese peasant who works hard does not have. Liberals are nationalism in that they think they have some natural right to much of the wealth by just existing.

People have been toasting their emperors in various Asian countries using various forms of this Chinese expression for millenia. In some contexts in Japan it simply means "hooray." I've chanted it myself after winning basketball games. As for "sieg heil," it originated with the nazis in the 1920s and has no meaning apart from the Hitler salute.

What specifically has Abe said that you think ought to drive the West crazy?

Nationalism is only taboo to the multi-cultural freaks who want to change the face of our national identity. You'll never hear them complaining about countries like China, Japan, Mexico or any other countries that have an identifying culture, language and demographic and want to retain them. Hypocrites!

The Hitler salute has also been used for thousands of years originating in ancient Rome....Why cant people use it then?

Try and stay on topic, pajamas. I say your comparison of the ancient Chinese "thousand years" to "sieg heil" is nonsense. I also suspect you cannot quote a single thing Abe has said that would justifiably cause Western outrage.

"Abe and supporters in the conservative LDP, which already has a solid majority in the more powerful lower house, have made no secret of their desire revise the constitution, which has remain unchanged since it was adopted in 1947.
Abe failed with a similar agenda during his first, brief tenure as prime minister in 2006-2007, but the growing missile threat from North Korea and belligerent territorial claims by China have helped boost public support for revising the constitution's war-renouncing Article 9, and easing the ban on collective self defense, which prevents Japan's highly capable armed forces from coming to the aid of the United States or other allies, unless Japan or Japanese forces are attacked first."

I dunno, if Germany started to build up military power I would wager that the USA would get mad. Its almost certain he will win his next election and change the constitution. This will allow Japan to once again amass military sources.

Actually there have been quite a few complaints about Japan in the Western media and the UN has repeatedly called for open door immigration policies to bring in 500,000+ people a year, mostly from poor Asian contries. Few in Japan are listening however.

Read "The Rise and Fall of The Third Reich". Then you'll know why nationalism is frowned upon. But I doubt it.
