It's tough to say. Alot of the reasons why the cartels have so much power and control large swaths of land is due to the fact that historically the further away you get from Mexico City the less power the Mexican government actually has over the local area - every rebellion in Mexican history has always begun in the far north or the far south.
Another issue is that the United States does not have the degree of corruption found in the Mexican military and law enforcement agencies.
In short:
Could they take over large swaths of land like half of Arizona? No
Could they have de-facto control over a few small border towns? Yes, and I wouldent be surprised if they already do.
If the cartels actually showed up on our side of the border and started massacring entire communities, throwing hand grenades into nightclubs, and decapitating mayors and police chiefs I think even Obama would send in the military and clean house.
Big deal. Probably 99% of your city is safe an civilized. You're more likely to get killed in a car crash driving to the "bad" neighborhoods than you are getting killed in the bad neighborhood itself.
No foreign cartel controls Chicago. At best, you can say that they might be the main suppliers, but they have NO JUICE on the streets.
As to the main question "can it happen here?" You bet your ass it could, but i doubt it would.
Anything that happens anywhere else can happen here. The United States doesn't have immunity.
The Columbians owned Miami and most of South Florida during the 80's.
Dead bodies regularly found floating in the Everglades attested to his "turf" ownership.

Yes and much of that war in chigago is about drugs from Mexico. The sinaloa cartel controls chicago.
This is true - the American people really have no idea of the reach of these Mexican Narco gangs in the USA. They are taking over cities and towns exactly the way they did in Mexico. They buy off the Judges, the Police and the City officials.
It's no surprise that Chicago is in the middle of a "war" - this week 13 people were shot in a neighborhood park. The biggest boon to the Narco squads are the "Sanctuary Cities" - they have free reign in these cities. They are "safe" in these cities to operate their business. Texas is a Battleground for this - But it is also moving into other cities. Once they become intrenched (the way they have in Mexico), then it is battle in the streets and beheadings for them to hold on to power.
Pay attention now -
We need a new immigration policy - BUT, is an immigration policy that allows these killers to get a free pass what we really want? I fear that few understand the dangers we face, how interesting that while our Government is promoting an "open policy" to these people - they are also attempting to disarm American citizens.
Mexico used to have a '2nd Amendment' type of law - the big difference was that in their Constitution, the President could "change" that law and the people had no say in it at all. In Mexico today - firearms of all sorts are severely restricted, basically only the very wealthy are allowed to have Firearms and/or guards to protect their lives and interests.
I don't believe that could ever happen here, but I also believe they will keep trying to make it happen.
The media rarely reports on the USA towns that have fallen to the Narcos, the parks they have taken over or the Border Control and ICE that can't do much about any of it. Once in these areas - it's very difficult to remove them. Oddly enough - it is the Mexican-American immigrates that fear them the most, because they understand them the best.

The Colombians didn't own Miami. The Colombians simply had control of the cocaine importation because they controlled the routes into the United States. Their American functionaries owned Miami. Colombians themselves didn't own the streets...the crews that sold the drugs did, and those crews were American Blacks, Whites, and Hispanics. Crews like the Boobie Boys and Vonda's Gang were the dominant crews in Miami. You can't control the streets (regardless of what people say) from Colombia. Besides, they have no interest in doing so anyway. Once they sell the dope, their mission is accomplished.
As for Chapo Guzman, his power is typically overrated. There is a large Mexican community in Chicago, and so moving the dope into Chicago is easy. That doesn't mean Chapo himself is running the streets, it just means that his connect is flooding Chicago streets with Chapo's dope. Chapo doesn't care about controlling Chicago...if he could sell the dope to Fargo, North Dakota for more money in the same quantities, he'd sell it there instead.
People say that Chapo controls Arizona too, and that's complete nonsense. Other Mexican kingpins move just as much dope into Arizona as he does; his name is just more famous (or infamous).
I can see several cities being taken over by criminal elements (other than corrupt polititicans) but not entire states.
