"Courage?" Why do you call that, "courage?"

In doing what she did, she offended the whole town, a town which, it would seem, is obviously Christian. They apparently didn't think it was a good idea to be anointing a class of people engaged in sinful behavior, and setting them apart as a special class, deserving of special rights, and essentially doing it in their name. It wasn't courageous; it was stupid!

It seems that in America today, the only people that it doesn't matter if we offend, are Christians and Jews.

Yeah, social conservatives are not the most gay friendly people.

No surprise that they would oppose rights for gays.

Non story really.

This is the problem. I support gay marriage and care less what two consenting adults do but when it comes to the government it should treat everyone exactly the same. There should be no "you are special" days. If everyone wants to be treated equal there is only one way to do that. Treat everyone equal.

This speaks more about the intolerance of the council than the so-called "gay agenda" that you're so scared about.

Interesting that a town that has problems like abondoned building on their main street would deem this nonsense as important enough to fire the Mayor over.

Nice to see that they have their priorities firmly in order.

Gays have the same rights as anyone else, as spelled out in the Bill of Rights. Why do they need 'special' rights?

"Social conservatives" (whatever that means), are not 'unfriendly' to gay people. I believe they should be treated no differntly than anyone else; i.e., they shouldn't be treated unkindly, in otherwords. But, homosexuality is still a sin, it is immoral, and unhealthy, and we shouldn't be 'celebrating' the behavior with "Proclamations" such as this Mayor tried to do.

She tried to put the town's stamp of approval on what she herself believes. The town didn't agree with her beliefs, and so rebuked her.

That's life.

Oh no! A mayor loses her job! Meanwhile, SIX STATES in the past year have legalized marriage equality.

Porterville, population 54,000, deep in SoCal. Only City Council in California to pass a resolution in favor of Prop 8.

Main employers: A mental health institution (Evil Gubmint!), the school district (More Evil Gubmint!) and Wal-Mart (Phew!).

Clearly the dynamic sort of community that will lead the cultural countercharge.
