What is an "ethnic" white person?
"White ethnics" came to The US relatively recently and there is definitely a history of hatred toward them-most notably Irish, Italian, Jewish, Polish.
Well, I suppose for most stereotypical WASPs (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants), their hatred of "ethnic" whites, as described by 2e1m5a, would mostly be chalked up to general xenophobia, I imagine.

Historically, they were probably seen as not "being American enough". People feared that Irish and Italian Catholics would listen to the Pope above country and their tight knit urban communities probably caused fear of the unknown. They also were poor immigrants that lived in poor and often violent communities.
There is an interesting book titled "How The Irish Became White". My Irish ancestors came here in the early 1950's and the Irish were pretty assimilated at that point although my family still moved to nearly 100% Irish (at that time) Dorchester, Boston.
