The Trader Joe's grocery-store chain has dropped a plan to open a new store in the heart of the city's historically African-American neighborhood after activists said the development would price black residents out of the area.
...
The Portland African American Leadership Forum said the development commission had in the past made promises about preventing projects from displacing community members but hadn't fulfilled them.
I'm confused as to how TJ would price blacks out. TJ is known for their lower prices. I would think it's a good thing: a grocery store with fresh food & regular groceries at a low price....that is what areas like that need desperately instead of only having corner bodegas as their option.

It would probably displace liquor store owners and start gentrification. I assume that's what their whine is.
Any majority-black area that peaks the interest of white people is doomed to then become a predominately white (and overpriced) neighborhood. TJ's is a trendy place to buy groceries, but many white folks love it and will flock to the area in droves, displacing the residents of the neighborhoods.
