Joe Barton A GOD representative calls for the repeal of the minimum wage.

GOP Rep. Joe Barton Calls For Minimum Wage Repeal

How many people think that this would end well at all? Am I the only one that finds this appalling? That he could be so out of touch with the people who he represents?

What do people here that support this think would happen if it were to pass?

OK tell me exactly what you would think would occur. Seriously, tell me how you think this would make our country better. I want to understand the reasoning. Is it:

with a lower minimum wage employment would go up as the supply of labor would more closely correlate to the demand?

Just keep in mind that the nation with the lowest minimum wage in all of the Americas is... Haiti.

There is no proof that minimum wage reduces jobs other than it being a bogus right wing talking point.

Ending the minimum wage would be like re-enacting Prohibition: We already tried it and it failed. People who think it's a good idea are living in a fanciful past.

The federal minimum wage should be repealed. Congress does not have the constitutional authority to establish a minimum wage, a maximum wage, or wages of any kind. If States want to establish a minimum wage, they have that constitutional authority. Whereas the federal government does not.

Considering that all 50 States already have an established minimum wage, and most of those States are higher than the federal minimum wage, a repeal of the federal minimum wage will have absolutely no effect except to bring the federal government one tiny step closer to being in compliance with the US Constitution.

But all of those "employed" people would be on welfare and food stamps because they cannot subsist on $5 per hour jobs. And if you think employers would pay higher wages out of the goodness and generosity of their hearts, I disagree. Otherwise we would not be seeing companies sitting on piles of cash while their employees' wages stagnate.

Many of the neo-conservatives on this forum would like to go back to the days when Ludlow was possible.

He's right. The minimum wage law has eliminated a lot of jobs.
