I'm sure they find us a laughingstock for honoring a widely respected man like they do. Look at those Americans....hahhaha...they're respecting this man just like us!
The Sheriff's office is not property of the government, so he wasn't obligated to lower the flag.
Quote:
United States President Barack Obama ordered that flags on US government buildings, ships at sea and installations be lowered to half mast through to sunset on Monday, in a rare honour for a foreign leader
I am saddened by the death of Mr Mandela. He was an amazing man, but I think Obama went too far as to having government, ships at sea and installations to lower the flag. If Obama wants to lower a flag, let him lower the flag flying over the WH, which is the usual procedure and is the procedure that other countries follow - lowering the flag at the highest government building. In the UK the only flag that was lowered was at Downing Square and at some neighboring diplomatic missions (a decision that they made).
Sheriff Rick Clark of Pickens Co South Carolina tweeted that he will refuse President Obama's direction that US flags be lowered to half-staff, in tribute to Nelson Mandela:
Clark's stated reason? Mandela's not an Amurrikin, he-yuck he-yuck.
Stay classy, SC...

I have all the respect in the World for Mandela, but he was a South African leader, not a American leader nobody should be forced to lower their flags if they don't want to. I have no problem with what they did.
Well, except a lot of other countries also lowered their flags.
Wait, maybe ALL countries are stupid
Flags were lowered at the government buildings where the head of state/president/prime minister conduct business (WH, Downing Square). That is the usual protocol. They don't order that the flag be lowered nationwide or at certain government/military facilities. Apparently Australia was the only country not to lower their flag at Parliament.
