Doing a bit of research on the issue i can find no evidence of Canadians or those born in what was to become Canada having anything to do with the burning down of the White House, I'd be curious to know how this story originated.
There was no such thing as the nation of Canada back then - Canadians were BRITISH subjects at the time.
BRITISH troops burned down the White House during the War of 1812.
Apparently you didn't do much research. A simple google search brings up this page from Smithsonian magazine:

We weren't at war with CANADA - we were at war with BRITAIN (and the Canadian's were BRITISH SUBJECTS).
Ken
Thank you for stating the obvious, but you're missing the point. The British soldiers who burned down the White House were from the UK. They had been sent over from Europe.
Canada is just living proof that left wing policies combined with common sense financial regulation are the recipe for Middle Class prosperity.
Canadians aren't so damn obsessed with destroying their own Middle Class through union busting, credit suicide (debt ceiling political theatre), and assinine resistance to UHC in favor of crooked private insurance.
It is great to be wealthy in America, but it sucks for everyone else (compared to Canada and the OECD). The right-wing will continue to beat their chest and call Canada a bunch of socialists... well darnit, "socialism" is working.
And they're taking in hundreds of billions of dollars in oil profits.
Would Texas be Texas without black gold? How about Alaska and N. Dakota?
Is this random question day today?
You tell me, would Texas and Alaska be better off or worse off without the oil revenue?
All I said is the truth, oil funds Canada's social programs. And they control their population much better than the US. Don't believe it? Try immigrating to Canada and see what happens.
They aren't welcoming at all unless you have a specific reason to immigrate there. No place for refugees or the poor. They let the US bear that brunt along with their military security and everything else we do for them.
Go Canada!!! Keep up the great work!! LOL at americans getting all butthurt when they hear that another country is performing better than the "always perfect" U$A. They immediately try to tear that country down, and I don't understand why. America isn't the best anymore-deal with it!!

Canada is not now and never has been socialist. What we have here is a regulated free enterprise system. Just because there are social programmes and some progressive laws, that does in no way at all equals "Socialism". What we have is not even 1% SOCIALISM.
Ah, i see. You meant the US population.
In any case, you don't have to move to Toronto proper, which is expensive. There are many inexpensive places you can live. I'm renting a house for a song, but you may not want to live in French milieu, even if it is a party town.

I don't think anyone is "butthurt" about this. We are smart enough to see skewed stats and Canada has such a small population compared to the US. How many millionaires in Canada compared to the US?
How much of their assets are held by Americans? And we have far more wealth middle classers than they do. They don't have the sheer numbers of immigrants and others living below the income line that qualifies one for middle class status.
If Canada was a US state, they wouldn't even be our most important state.
Canada doesn't go around messing with other countries. The last country to even attack Canada was the USA.
Freedom?
Canada, Japan, Australia, Germany, The Netherlands, New Zealand, the UK, France, Italy, Belgium have freedom. Seriously, pretty much the entire OECD has freedom.
I agree- We're pretty free down here in OZ. Safer too!!! Most americans just can;t admit defeat LOL
