Thought this is a good and interesting topic. Just read more from cnn.com about the issue. It's a pretty bold move and I admire this new Pope for his courage.
A few major things that it does...
1) Cuts off the ability of the mafia to use the church as a means of money laundering
2) Bans mobsters from "confessing" their sins at Catholic churches
3) Hurts the mobs PR in the community
Fortunately for the Mafia, the Pope also came out strongly against decriminalization of drugs. If drugs were legal, the Mafia would have no source of revenue. So the Pope acts to protect the economics of the Mafia even as he excommunicates its members. Pope is either a hypocrite or an ignoramus.

Please the mafia existed back when many of today's illegal drugs were not only available at the corner store for self-medication but were key ingredients in both Coke and Pepsi. It's an additional revenue stream, but truthfully those guys were able to get away with more back when they weren't mixed up with drugs.
You mean the Catholic country that put Mussolini in power, slaughtered Ethiopians, locked arms with Hitler, and allowed thousands of Italian Jews to be slaughtered right under the nose of the Catholic Church?
The Catholic Church in Italy were primarily responsible for helping Nazi war criminals get to South America.
I wouldn't be so quick to pat the church on the back. After all, the Mafia is far past its halcyon days...even in Italy.
As far as the U.S. bishops are concerned, they're in no position to excommunicate any one given their own issues. They'd do well to mind their own business.
The Catholic Church probably has more assets and scandals than the Mafia. Should Italians forgive the Catholic Church for it's cover up of sexual abuse and for helping Nazi war criminals escape justice and why has it taken the Catholic Church so long to openly excommunicate organised crime groups such as the Italian Mafia. The truth being the Catholic Church is one of the wealthiest organisations in the world and has vast hordes of priceless treasures and gold stored away, it's also had a close relationship with the Mafia, indeed the Vaticans Banker Roberto Calvi (God's Banker) was murdered in London in the early 1980's on Mafia orders.
you say that because you don't understand the sacraments. oh well, never mind we are all suppose to get each other to heaven, no man is an island.
Spent the first 20 years of my life as a Catholic. You can't run any Catholic dogma by me that I don't understand.
