Ted Cruz's ideas on government shutdowns don't help.
The GOP Establishment is distancing itself from Texas Tea Party Republicans (though they'll be more than happy to count their votes in November). Face it folks: Dallas--and Texas--got the short end of the stick because of uber-fringe ideas from the uber-fringe element of the Republican party. The old guard know that the only way for the party to survive is to expand the base. And Ricky and his cohorts' pronouncements guarantee the opposite.
Cleveland still must raise tens of millions of dollars in order to pull it off. Dallas already had $50 million pledged, found between the couch cushions.

I agree that TX Republicans are a special shade of "nuts", but I think they chose Cleveland because they need to win Ohio to win the race. Similar to why the DNC chose Denver, needing to win Colorado, a swing state.

As crazy as Perry's rants I don't think it had any impact on the GOP choosing Cleveland over Dallas. Quite simply from a logistical standpoint, holding the Primary in a swing state they desperately need makes more sense.
I'm not a republican (libertarian here), but it was a wise move on the part of the republican party in perhaps trying to sway voters to their side. Will it work in an area like northeast Ohio that is a democrat hotbed? Time will tell. As another poster alluded to, Texas is solid red. Ohio is a swing state, with the northern part being democrat, and the southern portion being more republican. At any rate, it is a win for my region, as it will generate revenue, as well show the world that Cleveland and northeast Ohio by no means are dead! Not by a long shot!

That's peculiar, because the GOP almost never wins the state they have their convention in
I do believe that they chose Cleveland because Ohio is still considered a swing state--and Texas is still solidly red--for now.
The GOP Establishment were pretty smart. They were able to kill two birds with one stone:
1. Make a play for Ohio in 2016 (a long shot, IMO).
2. Smack down Perry and the Tea Party.
With national demographics going the way they are, the Republicans don't look to win the presidency for a long, long time.
Choosing Ohio is just re-arranging the deck chairs.
