It does not say California gas taxes will raise by $1, it says the gas tax will increase to $1 from its current level of $0.68. The real increase is less than 1/3 of what you claimed.

Liberal or not, to me this is common sense. The car culture in California is ridiculous. They have to get a much higher percentage of those 38 million people out of their cars and onto mass transit. It's a serious quality of life issue there.
We need to get off fossil fuels. Only a matter of time before other states follow. Like the Europeans we will adapt and drive more fuel efficient vehicles. This is hardly the end of the world.
