Surprisingly, there IS and explanation. It seems far fetched, but stranger things have happened in nature.

It appears that the presence of Neanderthal DNA is a boost to disease resistance. Neanderthal DNA is present in those of European and Asian descent.
Note that Africans apparently do not posses Neanderthal DAN, which by implication means they are more susceptible to new diseases. Aids? Ebola?
