That's nice, but hardly a point in favor of American exceptionalism, and wasn't that her point in the first place? She did say "This is part of the argument that America is exceptional", did she not?

The UK abandoned slavery (without outside pressure and also without blowing through hundreds of thousands of their own citizens' lives) decades earlier, and then used considerable resources on having the Royal Navy limit the Atlantic slave trade. In the context of Western nations, the US does not have much of a record as regards slavery.

All nations have skeletons in the closet - it's a sign of maturity to acknowledge it.

Oh please don't tell me a northern state, such as Maryland for example, didn't end slavery until November 1, 1864 just six months before the end of the civil war!

Only a true unknowing idiot would believe the civil war was fought to end slavery. Is this really the garbage they are teaching in schools these days?

Well, according to the Articles of Secession, something so many seem to ignore, slavery was mentioned as a major reason for wanting to secede. The Union was fighting to preserve the USA. The South was fighting to keep slavery. I've read the Articles of Secession. A few Civil War historians have mentioned this too.

No one said it was ever fought to end slavery. However, it would be stupid to believe that the South's reason for wanting secession had nothing to do with slavery, when slavery was mentioned in the Articles of Secession.

Conservative CO school board member: AP history is wrong, US ended slavery ‘voluntarily’

This is who is in charge of writing course work--someone who apparently is unaware that the country fought a bloody four year Civil War that ended slavery? Or perhaps she slept through English class, too, and never learned the meaning of the word "voluntary."

The Conservative version of history is not about what really happened, it is simply about making Conservatives feel good. And they say liberals operate on emotion.
conservatives are extremely radical.
conservatives are openly advocating for what they label as patriotic American history, by any other name that's to be understood as government mandated pro American propaganda history.

conservatives largest complaints about public education indoctrinating and propagandizing children is laid bare, for the sham it is.
conservatives are the ones who favor indoctrination or as they label it patriotic American history.

conservatives are collectively insane.

I came to the same conclusion. What else would explain their support for teaching creationism in schools wile expressing concerns about America competitiveness on global markets?

However, they had to get the poor, who didn't own slaves, to fight for them. They had to convince people that if they didn't fight the way "the government will come for you" or "the Blacks will run amok".

Slavery is mentioned as a major reason for secession in the Articles of Secession. I learned this from Civil War historians.
This is American history as the lost cause. It was the tacit agreement between north and south to distort the history of the war.

The idea that 600,00- 700,000 Americans fought and died for the continuation of an institution that the side fighting for slavery wanted to end is hilariously ignorant.

In fact the total of dead Anericans in all of our wars is estimated to be 1.2million.

One war is responsible for as many deaths as all our other conflicts combined. That's called fierce fighting.

The southern states were fighting to maintain and expand slave states.

Like you wrote anyone can go to the source documents where the Southern states declare their reason for war and every state slavery was the reason they gave.

The fact that this conservative can pretend that 600,000-700,000 Americans died over slavery when it was going to end voluntarily is just a level of ignorance and dishonesty that I can't understand.

Obviously this person is a toolbag & it scares me that they're in charge of a US history curriculum. That said, progressives have taken an equally warped view on slavery in the United States.

West African slavery had been going on for 800 years when the United States finally got involved. Within 100 years of our independence we fought a bloody civil war where 600k White men died that essentially ended West African slavery as the world had known it. In reality, the United States & the White men who died to free the African slaves were heroes, not villains. Then you have the Progressive re-write of slavery where it was all plantations with evil whip handed slave owners. While those certainly existed, the vast majority of slave owners treated their slaves much more like domestic servants or family, rather than animals. That's why so many chose to stay on after the emancipation. Fast forward to today & Progressives want to blame Whites who hadn't even emigrated to the United States at that time. They want to blame & shame the decedents of the very Whites who fought for & then lost their jobs to, the African slaves. The % of White people walking the country with ancestral ties to slavery is negligible. Still, Progressives have taken over academia & they want the White middle class dragged down so this is the story we tell the children now.

Ironically, the Union could have purchased every single slave & freed them, far cheaper than the civil war cost.

It is the photo negative of the Progressive anti-american, anti-White racism, anti-middle class agenda being taught in the mainstream. Conservative & Progressive extremists are nearly identical in tactics & morality.

The dishonesty of the creationism debate is yet another example of conservative insanity.

Again these supposed freedom lovers and distrusters of government wants the government to teach about a religious belief to school children in public government ran schools.

conservatives are insane.

Yours is another lie about American slavery that it was all one big happy family.

Oh yeah the former enslaved choose to stay cause they liked being slaves.

Really in your mind that's the only reason former slaves would have stayed?

Not fear of living in an incredibly racist and violent nation, with zero contacts, no ability to own land, no education, littke protection under the law and agsin rampant violence.

conservatives are in a fantasy land
