I love this kind of analysis that tries to get at what interest groups really think and believe, as opposed to the claims that they officially spew. The study looked at spending of ad dollars by the two major parties, on the multitude of major TV networks. The top three networks for Democrats were the E! channel, MSNBC, and Comedy Central. The latter two are givens, but it is interesting to me that E! is numero uno.
The top three for GOP spending are the Golf Channel, Fox, and the History channel. Again the Golf channel (mid to upper class males) and Fox are a given, but the History channel is not expected.
It's an interesting juxtaposition--the GOP appears to see those who are intellectually engaged, even if in pop form, as their base, whereas the Democrats are convinced that the person who is fascinated by the Kardashians is their base.
There is more to it than just D vs R. Consider age. Alot of young people watch E!, Comedy Central, and MSNBC. People under 30 are the biggest viewers of those channels.
However, people over 30 are the biggest viewers of the History Channel, Golf, and FOX. I would say with the History Channel, the lion's share of the audience is over 30. Age is probably the biggest factor as to why. Older persons tend to be more conservative.
Another thing to figure out is this: What are the top channels by ethnicity/race? That could paint a different picture.
Lol! You think the History channel is about history?
It's about gator-killin', gold-minin', varmint-bustin, truck-drivin', etc. Mountain men, pickers and swamp people.
Actually no, one side tends to claim that they have cornered the market on intellectualism while they spend their ad dollars on the E! channel. The other side tends to be contemptuous of intellectualism while they spend their ad dollars on the History channel. The dollars do not lie
You do know the History Channel is mostly just reality tv these days.
The Golf Channel is intellectually engaging? Guess to conservatives its as much intellectual stimulation as they can handle, getting a ball into a hole.
The only networks that REALLY heavily skew to the GOP are a sports channel, a propaganda channel and a hillbilly reality show channel, don't understand what's educational about those.
A hillbilly reality show channel? Keep it up, left-wingers! Keep showing how biased you are against working class and rural whites! We are waking up to the reality of the mainstream Marxist garbage aimed at destroying and demoralizing us.
That's about as much as I expected. Probably not many oldtimers watching E! and not many young people watching Golf or History.
That leaves open the question of why Democrats think they can win by targeting a younger demographic. We know that they do this, after all that was how Pres. Obama stormed Iowa in 2008 and launched his national political career. He nearly doubled turnout from 2004, beat Hillary, and was on his way. It was largely on the strength of young voters who had never before participated.
Again, it was a strategy predicated on the low info voter. Props to Pres. Obama--it was political brilliance. However, I'm not so sure hat it is healthy for the country to put the low info voter in charge.
Actually no, one side tends to claim that they have cornered the market on intellectualism while they spend their ad dollars on the E! channel. The other side tends to be contemptuous of intellectualism while they spend their ad dollars on the History channel. The dollars do not lie
Fair enough...but that's still somewhat simplistic.
