Sounds like fraud or some kind of racketeering - we have laws covering this.

Exactly right.
Something conservatives and liberals can agree on, and yet Ted Cruz has something incredibly stupid to say.

As it happens, it's neither and we don't.

When you hear these words:

"We're from the government, and we're here to help"

You know it's a bad idea.

yep - exactly right. Got his talking points right from Comcast, where he was bought and paid (Comcast spreads cash wide on Capitol Hill - Tony Romm - POLITICO.com)

Sometimes things are right or wrong not because of party or president.

Obama won a lot of points with this decision, and I applaud it. I, like the Republicans (some), would wish we lived in a world where we didn't need regulation at all. Yet when almost 50% of internet traffic is through one company. . .and 10 companies rule it. . .none of them competing . . you can't sit there and say "let the monopoly do it"

The fact is Comcast had to buy people like Cruz, because they know that if they compete fairly against companies like Amazon and netflix, they will lose. So they want the ability to charge you extra. . if you subscribe to netflix instead of watching your demand through comcast.

and they know you wont' leave, because there is no competition.

I was very surprised that Obama came out this way, but i'm pretty excited about it.

I wish it wasn't needed, but against a monopoly you have to have some rules.

that's the best point on this entire thread.

as John Oliver said it best - it's like hiring a dingo to babysit your baby.

HOWEVER, that said, the internet must remain FREE and not to be run by corporate GREED!

The FCC regulates many things, the regulate the radio.
Since they regulate the radio, and curse words are forbidden. I ask you this... when these "free and open" people get their hands on the internet what do you suspect will happen. Will the internet be used as a political tool for the government or for the people. ? think about it.

The internet is not taxed, for use, for many things right now and I suspect when the government gets involved SOMEONE will be paying for higher taxes, FEES and or who know whatelse to fix something that is not BROKE. Because compaines are charging a service, some how the government feels it needs to FIX that.

Ok, that makes sense as far as I can follow it.... basically a feature of the way the internet is a bunch of smaller networks with different ownership of each (do correct me if I'm paraphrasing that wrong). Thanks for the clarifications

I only have anecdotal info - live in a rural area, used to live in the city. Cable is rare out here, and there are at least two dish companies competing for business. Unfortunately, both try to follow the cable companies' model in pursuing a monopoly. Since each has their own equipment that you have to buy and it's incompatible with the competitors, they try bully people into not switching services. More providers or more independent technical expertise would correct that.

Friends in other rural parts of the country have told me much the same about cable being non-existent, but that too is far too small a sample to be considered data.

The ISP/Government dealing is much of the reason I do not like the current approach to regulation. Authorized (ie: regulated) monopolization is only slightly better than spontaneous monopolization.

I'd love the internet to remain as it has been - but that may not be possible.

I agree but the problem is that Obama has lied so often he's burned any creditability and trust.
If the man had a 100% guaranteed solution to world peace, no one would believe him.

He created the problem with his lies in the past.

Wow....the amount of mental gymnastics to make this OBamas fault is amazing.
