My wife recently switched jobs. This company pays more but doesn't have insurance yet. The cheapest we can find (and of course it just went up 25%) is about $350 a month, for a "bronze" plan. WHat is everyone else finding for a 55yo? We're thinking about saying f-it and doing without. Last time I looked (3 years ago or so) my insurance was about $210.

The cheapest Bronze plan in my area for a healthy, non smoking family of four is $558 per month. That is for a plan with a $5,000 deductible per person, or $10,000 for the family. It's an HMO plan.

Yeah, you're old enough to basically kick the bucket. I wouldn't bother.

In other words, it's essentially useless unless you have a catastrophic health problem.

Isn't that what insurance is for?

Exactly. So would we be better off just putting that $550 per month in the bank and saving it for the unexpected? or pay thousands of dollars a year for a plan that we may never use? It's a gamble.

A similar plan cost $250 per month just three or four years ago. The costs have doubled due to the ACA. I do agree with you though that it is what insurance should be for.

You can look up your rates on the exchange. Please do that instead of looking to BusinessWeek. See how much it would cost for the cheapest plan.

Typical leftist Obama lapdog response. Using a headline though the article blows you out of the water:

"In some cases, consumers will find that insurers offering the lowest-cost premiums a year ago raised their prices in 2015 to make up for it. In Maryland, for instance, CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield, which has the state’s lowest premiums, proposed raising its rates as much as 30 percent on average in 2015."

We'll see wide variations in premium increases this year.
